I was shown a story that i think helps to define respect. It is called Give Praise It Only Comes Back To You. “I”ll bet you don’t like to go without recognition when you’ve done something good. Nobody does! Everybody likes to be appreciated.

Respect can be defined in the dictionary as,”a feeling or understanding that someone or something is important, serious, etc., and should be treated in an appropriate way”(Merriam-Webster), or also as,”a way of treating or thinking about something or someone”(vocabulary.com). Respect, personally, means to have integrity and to know when someone superior tells someone something and they listen to them and respond in a good manor. Respect is a concept of something that is not given but rather earned, it is something that someone must be raised to give, and also it can be something that can show how much someone means to someone else and how they think of them.

There are many forces at work that keep organizations, society, and mankind in general operating. These can range from the moral basis of the said organization or civilization, to logistic and financial structure, to the motivation and views of the people in it, the policies of the leader or leaders, as well as their finesse and charisma, all the way to the traditions and customs that make the organization stand out uniquely and its people proud to be a part of it. Those are just a few as there are many, many more, probably too numerous to name. But one force and concept holds most, if not all, of the others together to give any true organization its life and soul. That concept is respect.

With that being said, respect is important. That much is a fact. Who deserves respect? Our higher ups. Squad leaders, platoons sergeants, and first sergeant especially (our officers get respect without saying, I mean, look at all their ranger tabs. That is badass). There is not one NCO I would not do nothing for. If there is a request, one phrase in my head immediately fires off, "MOVING SERGEANT!" All the NCOs in Alpha Company are qualified and competent enough to do what is needed to complete the mission. The mission is part of the warrior ethos. "I will always place the mission first. I will never accept defeat. I will never quit. I will never leave a fallen comrade." Someone has paid someone a lot of dollars to carefully think of this.
