Critiquing communication and interviewing skills of a health assessment interview with a client Introduction Communication is one of the basic survival skills of human and also a fundamental part of nursing. Effective communication would help to promote a positive nurse-client relationship which is crucial for the delivery of quality nursing care (Sheppard, 1993; McCabe 2003). Health assessment is also vital in collecting information in the nursing process. In order to collect data in a systematic and standardized approach, and enable the nurse to determine different aspects of health and human function, the Gordon Functional Health Patterns which have 11 categories are usually used as a framework of the assessment. The pattern named …show more content…
The third weakness observed is the frequent use of cliché such as “don’t worry too much” and “that’s normal” which would give the client an impression that the nurse does not address and understand her situation well. This is because clichés sounds flippant ,do not always suit the current situation and could prevent the building of trust between the nurse and client (Dewit, 2001). One more weakness encountered is that the nurse might have frightened the client by saying “that’s serious!” and the final outcome of the breast cancer when the client said she had discovered a hard substance on her left breast. The nurse may not be able to handle this situation as the client burst in to tears the moment that she heard the frightening statements. This would distract and confuse the client and therefore the pace of the interview would be disrupted (Hodgson, Martin, 2006). Rooms for improvement If time is allowed, the nurse could teach the client how to perform a thorough self examination in order to assist her detecting the body changes as the client seemed not to have enough knowledge on BSE. Secondly, open-ended question should be adopted as the major type of interview questions because it allows maximum freedom for the client to respond in his or her own way (Balzer, Julia, 2004). Finally, nurse should rehearse the whole set of question before conducting a real interview so that she could be more relaxed when dealing with client’s responses. Insights and
By carrying out an assessment nurses can identify the causes of problems that require medical involvement. Nettina (2006)
Communication is usually taken for granted in our every day to day living as we use it without thought. Good communication skills are needed in the workplace and especially with nursing staff to and from patients when giving first hand care. Good or bad communication can make there experience within the health care setting a positive or negative one and can leave a lasting impression. A good health care provider can use there communication skills to put a patient at ease with a few comforting words or gestures, a lack of positive communication in the health care setting could leave the patient feeling neglected, ignored and not valued as a patient.
In nursing practice, communication is essential, and good communication skills are paramount in the development of a therapeutic nurse/patient relationship. This aim of this essay is to discuss the importance of communication in nursing, demonstrating how effective communication facilitates a therapeutic
Question #1: Identify the communication skills or actions the nurse used in this nurse client interaction
Communication is life long learning skills for nurses. Communication can be in different forms. It can be verbal or non verbal. Communication is important
Equally important the nurse indicated that she was in a hurry and unable to sit down, choosing rather to stand while she talks to the patient. What the nurse did not realise was that she had assumed a power stance and had failed to create an environment that was holistic, conducive and
Communication is any form of expressing and receiving of messages between individuals. The importance of Communication in the nursing profession is to maintain high quality care for the patient but also maintain effective collaboration between professionals. Boykins, D (2014) states that the “registered nurse is expected to communicate in various formats and in all areas of practice”. Various formats include speaking to patients and coworkers as well as utilizing appropriate protocols and systems to effectively communicate regards to patient’s status.
As a nurse, communication is an essential and important factor to building a therapeutic relationship between a nurse and patient as it is the difference between average and excellent nursing care, as it helps maintain a good quality of life and allows nurses’ and patients to interact and provide comfort when needed. The importance of good communication can become apparent with patients especially when they are in the hospital, as it helps the nurses build a positive relationship with patients and helps overcome barriers including physical, psychological and social. A therapeutic relationship is built on many factors which include both verbal and non-verbal communication which helps maintains the relationship and strengthens it due to the positive impact it has not only on the patient’s experience but also the nurse’s.
Discuss how an understanding of nursing-sensitive indicators could assist the nurses in this case in identifying issues that may interfere with patient care.
This is an analysis of a taped interview between a nurse and a patient who is taking pre-employment medicals. The information given during the interview, including her name, Pink Cloud is fictitious because of the need of confidentiality. During the interview, objective and subjective data will be collected. The areas of communication focused on in the analysis are verbal, questioning and listening skills. Analysis will be made and later suggestions and recommendations will be made on how to make improvements in the future. To achieve this, direct quotations from the will be used to make references to the three theories being analysed and will be supported by the literature.
The health educator used an anatomically correct model to show exactly how to perform a breast self - examinations (BSE), and this was correctly done. If the health educator would have showed her the techniques on her own breast, or even worse asked the patient if she could touch the patient that would have been completely inappropriate and unprofessional. The health educator also correctly educated the women on how important breast self - examinations (BSE) were for detection of breast cancer
The first of the five steps of the Nursing Process is assessment. Assessment is the step where the nurse collects information regarding the client’s previous and current health (Potter, Wood, & Ross-Kerr, 2010a, p. 159). When assessing an individual, there are several factors that need to be considered. For this paper, I subjectively and objectively collected information from R. Subjective data is made up of what the client tells the nurse (Potter, Wood, & Ross-Kerr, 2010a, p. 162). Objective data is composed of interpretations of other aspects of the client (Potter, Wood, & Ross-Kerr, 2010a, p. 162). During my interview with R, I asked her multiple questions regarding the determinants of health, which is subjective data, as well as assessed
In this course, I learned to achieve the holistic health assessment by viewing the patient as a whole. It is important to consider the patient’s physical, emotional, and spiritual aspect of their lives, which can greatly affect their overall health. I think the most important is the nurse’s intention to care for each patient as a whole and being present for that patient while they can. This course taught me to look at the other potential factors that may be causing the patient’s sickness such as: other health problems, diet, cultural beliefs, habits, stress and personal problems.
With all of this in mind, the biggest thing I learned is that my interviewing skills have significantly improved since my first practice interview. I no longer stutter as much, I am able to formulate the question in such a way that a client understands. By that same manner, I have lesson the amount of um’s I use in formulating sentences. Unfortunately, since I already had rapport with the person I am unable to asses my skill improvement in this area.
When I did meet the mark for constructing the proper questions, organizing an interview allowed me to experience the pleasure of collecting facts about a person, placing a personality to the responses, and gaining perspective about another person’s domain. Furthermore, I learned the value
