Even though Liberty and Regent University may have similar belief systems in terms of religion, the class and campus sizes are different. Liberty is a much larger university, but the teachers are less personable. According to Liberty University’s central website, Liberty’s campus covers more than 7,000 acres (Liberty Liberty University). I find it important to attend a university that has a large campus enough campus that students can get away and have space to study or to think if needed. The student to professor ratio at Liberty University for residential undergraduates is 24 to 1 (Liberty Liberty University). Liberty offers a multitude of sports on-campus, whereas Regent offers more clubs and activities both on-campus and off-campus locally. At Liberty University, there are 20 NCAA Division I sports (“Liberty” College Board). Some of the NCAA sports offered at Liberty include: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, and a variety of other sports. Liberty’s central website affirms that there have been “[o]ver 100 teams with NCAA championships appearances” (Liberty Liberty University). Furthermore, Liberty’s website points out that Liberty offers “37 Club Sports teams” (Liberty Liberty University). Clubs and sports are an essential part of the “college experience.” It is important to me that I go to a university that offers a wide variety of activities to do both on and off-campus. Other than sports, Liberty University has drama, musical theater, choral groups, and musical ensembles (“Liberty” College Board). I think Liberty offers an exceptional number of sports and clubs, which is important to me. Then there is Regent which does not offer a single NCAA sports, but it offers co-ed intramural sports and a wider variety of activities to pursue nearby off-campus. Regent University’s website states, “Regent and the Office of Student Activities & Leadership offer more than 50 chartered student organizations” (Regent Regent University). With a wider diversity of people at Regent, student organizations range from Surf Club to the Hispanic Law Students Association. Regent not only offers a wide variety of activities to fit its diverse population, but Regent also offers numerous intramural co-ed sports. Appalachian State University was founded by the Dougherty brothers in 1899 but was originally known as the Watauga College. Appalachian was originally a teachers college to create new teachers for the ‘lost province’ of Boone North Carolina. The Watauga College created a multitude of new teachers to better the education of those in the surrounding area. Appalachian State University is now known to put out some of the best teachers in the country.
Sports are like clubs a way for people to socialize and do what they love together as a team. During the 1930s at Texas Lutheran, college students had participated in sports. Sports at Lutheran college had been just a fun activity rather than a way of life during this time. Students often participated in football, basketball among other sports. Some Student’s athletics at the college supported both athletic contests against teams on campus and other school teams.
Westminster is a school that both offers a high level of academics and athletics. What is most exciting is a student’s ability to participate in many clubs and activities. I have always had a big passion for soccer since I started playing it in preschool. I would love to try new sports and Westminster gives me that opportunity. I have thought about playing basketball but my current school doesn't offer a basketball team. I have talked to a friend of mine that is in Westminster and he told me he’d definitely recommend it, especially because of the great friendships he’d made. That’s the kind of experience and camaraderie I’m looking for.
Smaller Colleges are better for students. The campuses is small enough to where people can get around easier unlike bigger campuses. It also means a small amount of students meaning smaller class rooms which is good for the teachers/professors so they can lecture better and have a more controlled class. It's also easier for the teacher/professor to help students because it is a smaller classroom. Students will have an easier time on learning and listening because they are in a smaller and more closed classroom and not a big classroom.
Most schools offer special resources and policy exceptions for student athletes. Schools usually provide fairs that introduce student athletes to clubs and organizations that may help at the beginning of the school year. They may also provide information booths that provide helpful resources. Colleges with strong student-athletic programs may offer unique academic services, such as exclusive access to libraries, study halls and departmental facilities. Student athletes should know that they may spend a short amount of time on their campus, so they may have limited familiarity of the school. This includes the functions and locations of buildings and departments. Becoming familiar with the school will help students successfully complete coursework.
Why is increasing funding for varsity sports at UMass important to the collegiate atmosphere and brand of UMass? As a distinguished alum and current Chief Economists at The Voya Risk Group, I firmly believe that collegiate culture and pride is formulated by the presence of competitive varsity sport programs and helps enrich the overall academic experience.
