Communication Is A Core Social Work Skills

Social work practice is defined by a set of competencies which practitioners must learn and follow to ethically practice and effectively work with their clients. There are ten core competencies all social workers must follow, and which are crucial for beginning social workers to learn and comprehend. The four core competencies to be addressed in this journal include competency four, diversity, competency five, human rights, competency six, research, and competency eight, policy practice.

The aim of this essay is to firstly provide a report of the media clip that shows an interview between the actress Meg Ryan and the talk show host, Michael Parkinson and examine the communication strategies employed during the course of the interview and scrutinize their effectiveness. The essay will then explore alternative strategies that could have been utilised and the likely benefits that these could have provided. Finally, the essay will discuss the importance of utilising the correct communication skills when interacting with service users or their carers’ and also, colleagues in order to create and maintain effective therapeutic relationships.

With my past work experiences as a case manager, I 've had various meetings about what services my clients were going to need and what my involvement was going to be in meeting their needs. This has helped me strengthen my communication skills and I have learned to talk to a variety of different individuals. I especially find myself to have confidence which has also helped me sound relaxed and approachable when meeting someone for the first time. With this in mind I felt positive I was going to do well on my interview reflection assignment for my Introduction to Occupational Therapy class.

During this period I was able to work with individuals who have schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, challenging behaviors and Alzheimer’s. With this, I developed a great insight into the roles of the social worker while attending to the multi-disciplinary reviews of care, helping the service users in determining their present wishes and needs so that they can have their desired outcomes and also promoting individuality, empowerments, responsibilities, rights, self-esteem and self-identity.

As a professional who works for human services, it is very important to have good communication skills. Having the ability to communicate well is glue to building trust, connection, better relationships, and respect from others.

This interview can be used to gain insight on what I am doing right and what I need to improve on as a social worker. We need to be able to communicate effectively when working with clients. Those skills are only gained through hands on practice. Being able to analyze and reflect on what occurred during the interview helps to better prepare for the next time or aids you to become more comfortable. Hence, these practices will come as second nature as time goes on. One of the sustains of this interview assignment was that, we were assigned a random person whom we did not previously have had a lot of interaction with. Correspondingly, while we are out in the field of social work you never know the people you are going work with. This interview provide me with hands on experience in the sense that I would become more comfortable or learn what needs to be done to reach a certain skill level . While we didn’t get to address some of the skills needed to reach out to a mezzo and macro level of client’s. You can attain basic practice skills that you can grow on and continue to a level where you can address a broader population of people. As a Therapeutic Staff Support, I communicate with my clients and their families daily. I had the opportunity to sit down on an evaluation with one of my clients. I am comfortable talking with my clients, but I did convey some nervousness in the video. This role play has taught me more about myself. There have been some challenges in planning and executing this role play. My role play displayed the initial interaction between a concerned mother and the social worker. In an initial meeting with behavioral health services, it is important for the client to be there. With the “Helping Interview,” all the knowledge and skills have been useful, realizing that I have not only made use of the majority of the micro skills useful in conducting the helping interview, but have also reflected on the stages of the helping interview at placement as well (Ivey, A. E, & Ivey, M. B., & Zalaquett, C.P., 2013).

I conducted an interview with Robin Layton and I was given consent to use her personal information to write this paper. It took place in the library lasting for approximately 12 minutes on February 28, 2017. The interview’s purpose was to focus on the client’s story, strengths, needs and the goals. The purpose of this paper is to critique myself as a social worker. It is also important that I learn to analyze my performance and to see which areas I need improvement in when interacting with clients in the field. This will ensure advancement so that I can better myself and the situation my clients and I will have while working in the field.

Although Ms. Quarles is in assessment services, she participated with a work adjustment class covering job networking. She was given a handout and different job hunting strategies to gain suitable employment opportunities. Evaluator discussed the importance of building good relationships with people to gain professional and personal contacts. Several clients participated in a role-playing exercise centered on networking. During the class activity, Ms. Quarles was attentive. She made some comments but she did not participate in the role playing

During the interview the social worker asked used different interview techniques. The social worker asked open ended questions, closed ended questions, provided empathy, the social worker also focused on client’s strengths. The social worker began to build a rapport with client by as asking basic questions and self- disclosure. The social worker then began to explain the Function of the Agency and the purpose of the agency. The social worker then began to ask exploration questions such as “Could you tell me about your situation?”, “Tell me about what has been going on with you so that we can think together about what you can do about your concerns” and “How are things going with school?” The social worker also asked her about her children and her diagnoses with HIV. The social worker provided her with resources that an assist her with finding housing. The Social worker had to do a lot of redirecting and prompting due to client’s resistance in the beginning.

There are so many qualities to exam during an interview, which repetition and practice will improve over time, however many aspects of this interview went well.

In order for there to be minimal miscommunication between a social worker and a client, a social worker should adjust their language to suit their clients (Promeroy & Nonaka, 2013). This is fundamental because if a social worker speaks in a way that a client is not familiar with, there could be a shift in focusing on understanding the words instead of listening to the messages that is being conveyed. In order for me to do this I tried to pick up on the language that the client used during the early engagement processes and avoided the use of jargon or acronyms. When I think of the word interview I think of it as a series of questions asked from one person to another to seek information. In my previous assessment we were asked to interview a fellow peer, on their personal experience of QIBT so far this year. We were not given any question, but made to think of our own. As we were interviewing our peer another peer was marking us on our overall ability to interview. This piece of reflective writing will be an explanation of what I thought my personal strengths and weaknesses were throughout my interview.
