With representation in television shows, it is often important that we, as an audience, find characters to relate to, as well as give us stories or interests that we can relate to in order for them to be considered a protagonist or as many would say the “hero”. Desna Sims, the main character of the hit TV show Claws, captures this essence perfectly throughout the show through humor and various situations that can often be relatable for some viewers. Through Desna’s behaviors and endeavors, this has allowed the public to perceive her meaning of perseverance on, what it really means to be a strong woman in times of controversy through the life she has been chosen to portray for television audiences everywhere. To fully characterize, Desna, as the main protagonist we must first understand what a protagonist is. A protagonist is the first actor in a play; thence the principal actor or character, perhaps one of the most prominent figures in a real situation (Cuddon 565). Moreover, being the protagonist is about pursuing the main goal of the plot of the story. Desna, who was destined to escape working for the Dixie Mafia under all circumstances, decided to continue to work for the Dixie Mafia to save Jenn’s daughter, Brienne. However, having a friend like Desna who gives her space and opportunity to provide for her family in the mist of hard times, she employs her at her nail shop. Later, handing her best friend the keys to Desna’s newly bought shop stating, “Jenn, this was the only way to get Brienne back.” (Season 1, Eps. 10 Avalanche).
