When we think of the word "poverty", the mind fills us with Third World countries. We think of countries within the African continent, Haiti, Central and South America, among others. The United States is a country with a heterogeneous society, full of many races and nationalities. However, we forget that poverty can be in front of us. How many times have we wondered if our neighbor, coworker, or our students are going through some need?

Poverty can be defined in many ways where people cant afford the basic needs like clothing, food, or a place to stay at. In addition, poverty is a smell that never leaves. Poverty is dirt. Furthermore, poverty is staying awake all night long in the cold wither, poverty also means not having enough money for his or her basic needs. Here I will be discussing about poverty in America, its causes, and the number of poverty in America. Poverty in the United states is increasing and getting up every morning, everywhere you go in the United states you will see an old man laying on the street holding up a sign that says “need help” or “hungry”.

My topic is poverty in the United States. I chose this topic for several reasons, the first and foremost being the fact that I feel it is one of the most important issues plaguing America’s citizens. It also is a problem that I feel can lead to several more issues, such as crime, drug use, gun violence, and hunger. I am curious to find out how much of an impact certain factors have on poverty, and would like deduce which causes are most prevalent so that they can be addressed. If the main cause of poverty is made known, then efforts can be put in place to help improve the quality of life here in America.

Poverty is rooted in the structural components essential to the economy and/or to institutional environments that favor certain groups over others, usually based on gender, class, or race. Discrimination based on race and gender often create the barriers to social equality. For example, the high rate of poverty among women may be a result of a patriarchal society that excludes women in a male dominated society. The same could be said for the African American population of our society. These two populations in today’s society make up a disproportionate amount of those in poverty.

For every seven Americans at least one of them lives below the poverty line. For a family of four the poverty line is roughly $23,300. Adults and children are skipping meals to just make ends meet. In many situations homelessness can be linked to substance abuse, that is of alcohol addictions or drug dependencies. The leading causes of homelessness or poverty in America is a broken relationship, mental illnesses, cannot afford any type of housing, unemployment, criminal history, too much debt, no health care and finally drugs and alcohol.

“Some 15 percent of children under the age of 18 are living in poverty, and more than 9,000 students in Porter County public schools receive free or reduced-price lunches,” (nwi.com). Hunger is related to food because if you suffer from hunger then that means you are not eating any food or you do not get enough food on the regular basis. Poverty is related to hunger because poverty means to be extremely poor and if you are extremely poor then you will not be able to pay for food or other necessary resources. Throughout the United States (U.S.) americans suffer from poverty which can most of the time cause hunger which is much worse.

The different types of poverty are Absolute Poverty and Relative Poverty. Absolute Poverty is where a person does not have enough income to provide for basic needs such as food, clothing and shelter, and they often rely on $1.50 a day or under. 10

Poverty exists for many reasons: the organization of the U.S economic system, high divorce rates, single parent families, racism, discrimination, disability, poor education, mental illness and individual failures. Those who live in poverty or in poor neighborhoods are at a much higher risk of psychological distress which can be caused by higher rates of unemployment, financial burdens, homelessness, substance abuse, and criminal activity. Many who live in poverty become vulnerable to poor physical and mental health, they are often victimized by society and their ability to access health care is significantly restricted. Many who are psychologically impaired face barriers in furthering their education and in finding employment as well.

If poverty and inequality continue, the majority of the population will live in poverty, since currently there are more poor people than rich people, and the poor people are those who have more family and children, which means that these are going to be the inhabitants of the future. Living in such bad conditions can cause high risk of cardiovascular, respiratory and infectious diseases. And can get to create a very mortal epidemic. This can lead to have many deaths because they do not have enough money to cover the treatment, or there is no cure for the disease.
