Carb Cutter: Does it Really Cut the Carbs? 2:30 PM T Freeman Spring Semester 2012 The amount of obese and overweight individuals is increasing every year in the United States. With 33.9% of American adults obese, and 34.4% overweight, but not obese, more and more people are looking for any alternative to lose weight (Anonymous 2011). If someone told you that they knew of a weight loss pill that actually works, would you consider it? A new study has proven that Carb Cutter pills are effective at preventing amylase, an enzyme that breaks down starch, from digesting starch. This then prevents starch from converting into glucose and then to body fat. The carbs that aren’t absorbed then pass through the digestive tract and are excreted. …show more content…
The control group was expected to see a decrease in absorbance because of the starch being digested by amylase. Our experimental group contained everything the control group did, including the Carb Cutter pill. If the Carb Cutter proved to actually work it would show a steady high absorbance, proving that it constantly keeps amylase from digesting the starch. The graph below was charted with results to indicate how well the Carb Cutter actually worked. Human error is easily obtained when working on an experiment with so many different solutions, time measurements, and accuracies of measurements. An easy mistake could have been made while waiting 15-20 minutes for the Carb Cutter to digest. With the time crunch in the Biology Lab, the Carb Cutter may not have been completely digested before rushing to begin the experiment. The results from the experiment showed an increase in absorbance with the Carb Cutter pill, which is not accurate because there is no way that more starch was made in the solution. Given more time for the procedure, this lab experiment may have received more accurate results. The results obtained by students of the Biology department of UGA correlated with that of the Mayo Clinic study; amylase may be slowed, but it takes a great dosage of bean extract to really get the job done and see results. From the graph, we can see that the Carb Cutter
This experiment was performed to determine the glucose concentration in selected drinks, Coke and Gatorade. Absorbance readings were measured providing us with values to then calculate the glucose concentration, these values were then compared with theoretical values. Results that were obtained from the experiment fell short of the theoretical values which resulted from human error.
enzymes that will be used during this lab to test the ability of amylase to break down starch ,a
And for our results of amylase activity, although there could be the amount of error happened in the personal result, the data that we used during the report was gathered from all of the data in whole bay, therefore, it helped to get a reliable
In this experiment, I concluded that amylase have the abilities to catalyze the breakdown of the starch into glucose. Also, some molecules, such as the Lugol’s regent (I2Kl) and glucose are able to permeate through intestine (Dialysis tubing) while others, such as starch is not able to permeate through the (Dialysis tubing).
The biological hypothesis is, temperature has an effect on the rate of starch digestion by the amylase. The null hypothesis is, there is no significant change in amylase activity as the temperature changes. Any deviations observed is due to chance. The alternative hypothesis is, there is a significant change in amylase activity as the temperature changes and the temperature has significant effect on amylase activity. The prediction is that temperature has a significant effect on amylase activity and the null hypothesis will be rejected. This will be indicated by tube 2 showing the most starch digested, which would be caused by the most enzyme
Anyway, the bottom line is carb cycling is actually somewhat dangerous when it comes down to it. If you keep yo-yo-ing your blood sugar up and down then your body is going to have to continue to regulate it. The best method of practice is to keep it as even as possible. This will prevent excess fat storage as well as those nasty cravings when your blood sugar crashes as a result of insulin doing its
The weight loss industry is a multi-billion dollar machine, perpetually fueled by not only new information, but also data that have remained true for decades. Although it is unsurprising that the human body will lose weight when it expends more calories than it consumes, new findings lead to several alternative diets and weight loss methods that gain much more popularity than the basic concept of eating less and exercising more. For

Since the issue of obesity remains prevalent, there are leading experts in the field of health sciences and exercise physiology who have tried to prevent obesity from increasing. These experts want to stop the obesity epidemic, but they have different approaches to solving the issue. One of the methods that have been working towards becoming a solution was “the development of obesity-preventing drugs”. The experimental use of drugs was run by experts that are a part of the FDA( Food and Drink Administration), they believed that there were many different solutions, and that “one of the most effective” would be a weight-loss drug.(Food and Drink Administration). However, these drugs were often failures and deemed unsafe and ineffective on their
The use of weight loss medication does not work alone, one must change their lifestyle.
ATTENTION STEP:Ads on slimming pills pop up on your Twitter feed, on your Facebook page: "This magic pill can burn fat fast”.“Itsingredients are plant-based”. It is undeniable that many women who are frustrated because of their obesity get easily tempted by these adswhichpromise them of losing weight rapidly without diet or exercise. Unfortunately, thesewomen do not recognize that these pills may have fatalside effects until they experience this themselves. I myself never recognized how harmful slimming pills are until I read about the tragic endings of women who took these pills hoping to have a better figure but instead they lost their lives in distress.
Students thought a positive or negative sign must written in the predicted column causing them to be wrong about the actual results. Lastly the carotenoids pigment it was positive that starch should be present but the assumption of starch is present was found to absent in the colored region of the
However, particularly very low-carb diets, may lead to a more short-term weight loss than do low-fat diets. Therefore, cutting calories and carbs may not be the only reason for the weight loss since low-carb diets may help prevent or improve serious health conditions, such as metabolic syndrome, diabetes, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. Nevertheless, any diet that assists in shedding excess weight can decrease or even reverse risk factors for cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Yet, low-carb diets may improve high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and triglyceride values somewhat more than do moderate-carb diets. Thus, an individual that severely cut carbohydrates may experience an assortment of impermanent health effects,
Today in America, being thin is the latest fashion statement. Numerous Americans, are impacted by the media and the ads, which is where the ideal of being skinny is coming from. Every day, Americans are affected by the images of thin actresses, actors, and models. Young adults are starting to have lower self-esteem and disapprove of themselves since they can’t resemble those in the media. Most organizations that make diet supplements, target individuals who are powerless and vulnerable. These are people who need to look fit and healthy, yet would prefer not to invest the effort of counting calories and working out. Diet pills are a quick fix to the issues of getting more fit. In the article “The Shocking Secrets Everyone Should Know about Diet
The philosophy is that by restricting carb intake, the cravings for carbs will subside, resulting in a decline in overall food consumption and weight loss.
