Discuss treatments. The symptoms of depression usually vary from person to person; symptoms can either be severe or moderate. Some people can be indecisive, have uncontrollable sobbing, and feelings of despair, anger, and worthlessness. People with moderate symptoms might still be able to function, but their depression can cause them to lack a feeling of pleasure or ambition. As the above symptoms suggest, depression has to do with a lot more than just being sad. Brain-imaging studies point to several brain areas that are likely members of this circuit, particularly the prefrontal cortex, the hippocampus, the amygdala, and Broadmann Area 25, an area located just under the brain part called the cingulate cortex. Research suggests that, among depressed people, activity and blood flow are low in certain parts of the prefrontal cortex, yet high in other parts; the hippocampus is undersized and its production of new neurons is low; activity and blood flow are elevated in the amygdala; and Broadmann Area 25 is undersized and overactive. Immune System: When people are under intense stress for a while, their immune systems may become dysregulated, leading to lower functioning of important white blood cells called lymphocytes and to increased production of C-reactive protein (CRP), a protein that spreads throughout the body and causes inflammation and various illnesses.
