In 1910, Europe was the city that rested upon a hill. It was home to countries that spanned around the globe. Britain’s colonial empire, in the making since the early 1700’s, still remained intact. France, now recovered from the Napoleonic Wars, is a thriving republic. These two countries were indeed the most envied of them all. Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy, and even Russia desired to colonize through imperialism. However, these countries in the East were too late. Britain and France had claimed the majority of the last “unexplored” continent that is Africa. Despite the fact, Italy scavenged what was left of the continent. Alliances spread throughout the old world. Two of these alliances stood above the rest: the Triple Entete and …show more content…
Britain, along with France, conquered the majority of the continent. This is best seen in document F. The population of the British colonies was a resounding 400,000,000 people. This is an absurd amount for the time period in which we talk about. Germany, a late participant in the Scramble for Africa, only had 12,000,000 citizens reside in its colonies. Countries such as Russia and Austria-Hungary did not even get to participate and had 0 colonies. The greed of imperialism was indeed the spark that ignited World War 1. Prior to the war, a great military build-up occurred, which also played a factor in the starting of The War to End All Wars. The militaristic policies that were employed by the leaders of European countries only intensified feudal debates. It infuriated countries like Germany. In document D, German Chancellor, von Bulow says, “We don’t want to step on the toes of any foreign power, but at the same time we don’t want our own feet tramped by any foreign power.” This kind of thinking is what lead to the massive military buildup. Document C portrays the militarism best. The graph indicates how the European nations spent the majority of
At the end of the War, changes in political structures were evident in many countries,
In the video “Guns, Germs, and Steel: Episode 3”, the relationship between geography and history is examined and, to no surprise, it is extremely strong. In fact, it may arguably be the strongest determining factor of a nation’s success. It is also important to note that geography is one of the most important factors in shaping a nation’s culture and way of life. This means that a nation who is successful in their own geography may not be as successful in one that is very different from what they are used to. Europe’s dominance over Africa is a fantastic example of this.
“Although it has often been stated that the nations of Western Europe were far superior to the rest of the world at the same time of their initial contacts, this, in fact, is not true.”
The English colonies played a major role in progressing the history of the world as well as the national stature of the British who held at being one of the most dominant powers. These colonies established in the New World were not all created for the same reasons hence the initial separation with the only connection coming from past history that intertwined with Europe and eventually from providing raw materials to the Mother Country (Europe). This initial separation explains the individualistic mentality that runs across all colonies. Ranging from religious discrepancies to political/ economic differences. In other words, the main goal was self-protecting and preservation. However, this would not guarantee the brightest of futures. Establishing
Imperialism is a policy of extending a country power or influence through either military or by trade. Imperialism was a legitimate policy for the United states to follow in the beginning of the nineteenth century, because it spread Christianity, increase economic power and profits and it benefit the weaker countries that united states take over.
Britain’s colonialism caused many problems for natives and natural born British who lived in the colonies. The illusion of patriotism shattered as conflicts of race, class, and gender equality took light.
With the assembly of the Berlin Conference from 1884 to 1885, the African continent was split between seven European powerhouse countries. These European countries involved, except - Italy, Belgium, and Germany - had all recently lost their American Colonies. Therefore pushing them to colonize new land. England, France, Portugal, Italy, SPain, Belgium, and Germany gained African territories in hopes of civilizing the barbarian native Africans. They hoped to give the Africans the final push into being a civilized place, where could dominate.
France much like England was late in the race for colonization, foreign wars and domestic strife in the 1500’s were the main reasons
European nations signed secret treaties that created a system of alliance and the leadership was
In the 1800’s Imperialism, an action by a strong nation to take control of another country, became prominent in Europe towards Africa. The driving forces of Imperialism in Africa were competition for land, economics, and the need for power. The “Partition of Africa, 1884-85” map demonstrates the competition related to the colonization of European colonies in Africa. There were a total of 7 European countries that imperialized Africa, but the main countries were France and Britain. The only non-colonized countries were Ethiopia and Liberia; this was because they had an established strong government.
Which of the following represents an impact on western Europe from the development of colonies?
Europe was a major power over the course of world history, before the rise of the United States, which was originally a British colony. As a result, many people wonder why that came to be. Why is it that Europeans became so dominant instead of the Native Americans or the Incas? Jared Diamond attempts to provide an answer to this question by writing the book Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies. In this volume, Diamond describes how geography is the major reason why history became history. Using Diamond’s explanation, we can see how geography determined Europe’s fate in the approaching future.
