A Research Paper On Police Brutality

Being that, on October 20, 2014 in Chicago where 17 year old African-American Laquan McDonald was shot brutally and excessively by officer Jason Van Dyke the boy was shot sixteen times the first shots where to his back then he collapsed on the floor the officer kept shooting till McDonald hit the concrete and the officer still shot at him. The Chicago community was outraged about the officer shooting the teenager. Even today police brutality is still out there this is a perfect example of police brutality shooting someone with a full magazine of bullets is crazy and for having a Swiss army knife. The officer will be facing chargers for first degree murder.

Overall, the vast majority of police shootings are justifiable. Police shootings are almost always in actual self-defence, where the culprit has tried to attack the officer or has possibly reached for a gun. 58% of people shot by police were armed with guns and 17% with an edged weapon such as a knife. This could be suggested as being the reason that 99% of officers get away with using force. There are thousands of cases which prove that police use their force in the right way. Police brutality is an abominable, and unjustifiable act of violence. Violence is a wildfire that spreads into society without any remorse for individuals affected by it. Blood, battery, murder, pain, and suffering are all components of what violence represents. Police brutality is no exception. True justice and peace cannot be established as long as police violence is evident. I personally cannot bare the thought of unnecessary homicide because no one deserves death and this has happened too frequently.

How would you feel if it felt like you couldn’t trust the police that patrolled your neighborhood. Police Brutality still remains as one of several forms of police misconduct because of corruption in the police department, racial profiling and officers not being held for their actions. Every passing day we are losing citizens to our own protective service. Police Brutality is such a controversial topic because there has been many cases where the civilian citizen is usually the victim. People speculate whether or not it was the police officers fault, and while a different community of people blame the cop as being the agitator. Without further evidence to reveal the truth we will never know, but there are a lot of cases when people make assertions that there is a case of police brutality. Police officers are supposed to be trained to handle cases where the civilian is not in the right state of mind, and it is up to the officer to ameliorate the situation in a peaceful manner. In the circumstance when an offender is hurt or killed by a police officer, it is upsetting to hear about it because the offender is usually not armed or they don't pose much of a threat.

There is a plethora of news stories and articles about police brutality, showing how officers blatantly overstep their boundaries and nearly never get punishment. Many are quite shocking like the incident that happened literally a few blocks down the street from our beloved high school. During the heated man hunt for officer Dorner (a very large African American man) two women in a newspaper truck were shot at an astounding 103 times, hitting the older woman in the back twice and wounding the other. They were offered a $4.2 million dollar settlement and the officers were put back onto our streets. This could have been any of us; myself on the way to school, my best friend Jesse, or even Dr. Wesley in her Range Rover. Another incident happened in New York City when police were in pursuit of a man that was allegedly weaving through cars in Times Square, the officers fired straight into the crowd and shot two women. The guilty officers faced no punishment but the man that they were in pursuit of was charged with felony assault on the grounds that he was responsible for the injuries that the police had caused. This does not sound like the justice system the forefathers dreamt of. This

Police brutality is something that happens way too often in America. I feel only this happens because of the the title given to the officers and their badge. Most of the time police brutality happens to low living community. Police brutality is systemic because most departments don’t provide the proper training, the consequences for the issue is very minimal, and they mostly target the minorities. There is a lot of separations between the police and the community. Certain race will have more chance of dying than others. For example the African Americans has a higher chance of dying in the streets due to any police officers.

Police in the United States abuse their power and take it to a whole new level when it comes to applying the law to people because “more than 920 people have been killed by the police in 2015.”  Police brutality is not something new that happens in the United States it is becoming something common. They are running around murdering people who are armed and to people who are unarmed. Then all they have to do to be excused is show up to court and explain how they felt like they were in danger and say sorry. This is probably what gets them off the hook without consequences and the badge they wear. The problem with police being unfair is because they arrest the wrong person, treating minorities with less respect and wishing minorities will kill each other the first time.

Some police officers have taken advantage of their power and abuse their place in the community, and society has come to fear the police.The justice system is failing and 84% of surveyed policemen agreed that it’s not unusual for a police officer to turn a blind eye to a fellow officer that was using more force than necessary. Over 4861 incidents have been reported,6613 cops involved, and 6825 victims have been accounted for so far. The police force should maintain the rules and codes of ethics and use different attempts necessary rather than use barbaric and inhuman ways to comprehend suspects.Police brutality is one of the number one human rights violation in the United States, and this needs to be changed. There are way too many cases and proof that could possibly justify all of these wrong doings.

In our times, the police have become the criminals. Some police are using their power to do bad things, and society has come to fear the police. The law enforcement system needs change. The courts have failed the police, and the police have turned to other means of justice. We must stop the corruption in the police force. The family of the people who is being killed is being hurt more than anything.

Police have a duty to serve and protect; but for the last 40 years they have been abusing their authority. Unfortunately, police brutality is common in America. Officers aren't even serving time for the crimes they commit. According to “Journalist’s Resource” “Minority groups do not feel comfortable when cops come around because they feel as if they are there to harm them and not protect them.” When police come around Americans are supposed to feel secure and not afraid. Policemen should be charged for their actions when they are abusing their authority.

Due to race, not standing for the National Anthem, increased amount of police weapons and inequality, police brutality has become a huge problem nationwide. Police brutality has always subsisted but within the last 10 years it has been increasing drastically. We need to take a stand against and end the police brutality. According to the document To Serve and Protect, “To serve and protect: we see the slogan emblazoned on the sides of police cars and recruit officers hear it from their instructors at the academy. It is also a mandate of the church, Jesus reads from the prophet Isaiah in the synagogue in Nazareth and proclaims his mission is to serve and protect the vulnerable, the oppressed (Luke 4:16-21).” I myself want to be a police officer and I think because of all the police brutality incidents police have started to get an atrocious reputation. What society believes is that all police officers feel they are “above” the law, that is not true. Most police officers disagree with the excessive force some use. It is not rightful. This is just adding another problem with how American is going down in a negative way. Police officers are supposed to protect us, prevent crime, and enforce the law. They are only allowed to use excessive force when there is a necessary reason. A necessary reason would be if the officer has a probable cause to believe that the suspect poses a significant threat of death or serious injury. Many cases have been uprising on police brutality and race.

According to the law dictionary, police brutality is the use of excessive and/or unnecessary force by police when dealing with civilians. This definition is extremely simplistic when we look at what is going on in the world today. We have seen children be murdered by a police officer, young men taken from their families because of a misunderstanding, and the worst thing about all of this, is it stems from an abuse of power along with stereotyping and racism. The job of a police officer is to protect and serve, and many people are finding it immensely difficult to trust those who are meant to protect us. This is an issue that I believe needs to be handled more aggressively; there should be grave consequences for any officer who partakes in unnecessary violence towards any person.

Excessive force is not a new phenomenal. It is a part of many law enforcement and police department across the country. There are laws that address the use of excessive force by law enforcement officials was created to fight the actions of the Ku Klux Clan. The Rodney King case changed the outlook on the use of excessive force due to the fact that it was caught on tape and the jury found that the officers didn’t do anything wrong. The use of excessive force can bring on the violation of civil rights.
