A child with learning problems may be many developmental years behind their peers, this will have a big impact on what they can do in all areas of development including physical skills, social skills and intellectual skills. They may find it especially hard to interact with children of the same age or stay interested in conversation. They may also need to have one-to-one lessons at school to help educate them as they may not be at the same cognitive stage as peers. This may leave them feeling left out.

Some common signs of a learning disability that as a teacher we can look for in the classroom would be, a student speaks later than most children, pronunciation problems, slow vocabulary growth, student is often unable to find the right word, difficulty rhyming words, trouble learning numbers, alphabet, colors, and shapes, extremely restless and easily distracted, trouble interacting with peers, difficulty following directions or routines, and lastly the fine motor skills are slow to develop. Children with a learning disability may not be capable of holding their attention for an extended period or pay close attention in class. A learning disability is not a problem with intelligence, disorders are caused by a difference in how information is received, processed and communicated in the brain.

Learning disabilities are defined as the inability to process information and the inability to communicate effectively. This can cause problems during the child’s years in school. It is often characterized by as having a below average intellectual functioning level as well as below average adaptational skills.

While perceptions of learning disabilities (LD) may vary according to country, culture, and teachers, it is often necessary to diagnose students in order to receive funding for services. It can be helpful to recognize those learning disabilities that students may have in order to provide extra assistance when necessary. It would be advantageous, too, if wide recognition of LD could take away the stigma that is often present. However, since LD is a multi-faceted topic, labeling often carries a negative connotation and can lead to ostracizing of students. It is beneficial for a student if the classification of a student with LD results in an enhanced educational experience.

Students with learning disabilities are a diverse group of individuals, exhibiting difficulties in many different areas. The areas most affected are reading, writing, listening, speaking, reasoning, and math; however, Learning Disabilities are specific to the individual. It is essential for educators to understand all of the possible characteristics that may be seen in children with LD. By knowing what to look for, educators may be able to help provide a meaningful educational experience. The most common types of Learning Disabilities are those that impact reading, writing, and math. According to “Specific Learning Disabilities,” there are five core concepts to consider when defining LD. First, Learning Disabilities are a heterogeneous group; LD comes in all shapes and sizes. Second, LD results in a significant difficulty to listen, speak, read, write, reason, and perform math. Third, Learning Disabilities are unique to the individual. LD is said to start in the central nervous system, and does not disappear over time, but can take on many different stages over a child’s life. Fourth, LD can occur simultaneously with other disabilities; that would not otherwise be classified as a disability. Some examples include ADHD, sensory aversions, or emotional disturbance. Lastly, LD is not caused by external influences. People from different cultural backgrounds may also have a Learning Disability (Kirkland, 2012). Learning disabilities are becoming more and more common as the years go on. According to the life span development book “of all the children in the United States, thirteen percent from three to twenty-one years of age in the United States received special education or related servers in 2011-2012.” That is three percent higher than the amount of people with learning disabilities from 1980-1981. Studies have been and continue to be conducted to determine why learning disabilities are becoming more prevalent in American in recent years.

All teachers dream of the classroom filled with fifteen tranquil, enthusiastic students, all with their note books out and pencils prompt for note taking. This is the classroom where everyone works together, at the same pace, and without any interruptions or distractions. This is the ideal classroom setting. The only problem with this picture is that it does not exist. Students are all different. Kids all learn different ways, and at varying paces. Both Physical and Learning Disabilities can hinder a child’s learning speed and hold them back from the rest of the class. It can be very difficult to identify a child with a learning disability because students can often be misunderstood and labeled as unmotivated and lazy. These students

Another challenge that learning disabled students may face is that at times it can be paired up with another disability or maybe a disorder. An example can be a learning disabled student who also has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).When this occurs, like social anxiety, it creates barriers for the students when it comes to their ability to pay attention and learn in class. Teachers in the classroom need to be able to identify if students have a learning disorder, because learning disorders become more evident in an academic setting. If so the teacher then needs to speak to the parents and see if assessment can be run to find out if the child does suffer from a LD. In the classroom, a student with a learning disability may need things explained in a different way, or broken down in words or a way that they are able to process. The student may also need extra time to complete assignments. An example would be if a student has a reading disability they may next extra time to complete the assignment. Besides a conscientious teacher, and extra time in class, student with learning disabilities will also need to have their parent. On the other study conducted by Waldron, the results show that children with learning disabilities did poor on math compared to children without learning disabilities. Programs to help children with learning disabilities improve in math should be enforce in every school to help these children succeed. The dropout rate on children with learning disabilities was 14.1 percent on a longitudinal study conducted by Doren. The reason for dropouts was that children with learning disabilities felt they were not compatible academically as children without learning disabilities. They felt disadvantaged compared to the other children. This shows that children with learning disabilities are in greater danger to dropping out of school. Programs designated for children with learning disabilities to help them on their reading, math, and writing would drop the rate and help those students graduate

Additionally, the characteristics of a person’s learning disability can vary greatly, making it difficult to diagnose since while there are some common characteristics of learning disabilities, each individuals most common deficit may be different. Dr. Karge’s power point, Learning Disabilities, she point out that it is almost impossible to provide a typical profile for individuals with learning disabilities “because a person’s unique characteristic is their unique difference” (slide 16). For many people with a learning disability, their diagnosis doesn’t come until elementary school, as an adult, or not at all (Theories & Strategies for Nonverbal Learning Disabilities, Pierson, slide 3). Since late diagnosis is often the case for those with learning disabilities those around them may believe that their deficits are caused by failure to pay attention is class or a misunderstanding of the material. This can lead to frustrations for the student, their parents, and teachers. If their learning disability is not diagnosed, one attempted solution might be to have the student repeat the grade, making the student younger than his or her peers the next year, and possibly feeling self conscious or socially ostracized. The student’s parents and teachers may feel frustrated because having a student repeat the grade, while providing no additional help will result in the same deficits. Until the student’s learning disability is assessed and diagnosed, no steps can be taken, or services provided to help them
