2 Criminologists When compared to other actions seen as socially unacceptable, how can we define criminal behavior? For answers to such inquiries, one should consult a professional in the field of criminology. Criminology is a subfield of sociology that examines crime. Criminologists aspire to understanding crime for the purpose of preventing it by means of gathering data from analysis of the criminals, their motive or reason, the crime they commit, and consequences thereafter (Turvey, 2022). The objective of criminology is to identify what causes criminal behavior and what is an effective yet ethical way of correcting it. The method of approach or research techniques used in the fields of criminology and criminal justice are equivalent, if not very similar to those used in other areas of the behavioral and social sciences. Criminology applies a scientific approach to studying criminal behavior. The result of course, is not limited to just one method. However, each method used to measure crime can simultaneously work together or stand alone, with nearly every approach being another form of the quantitative research method. Experimental Criminology Experimental criminology involves controlled cause-and-effect studies. Design types include quasi-experimental and experimental. In experimental criminology, individuals, establishments or other units of analysis are assigned a new, innovative treatment or intervention alternative (Mazerolle, 2011). Over the past 30 years, experimental criminology has grown, leading to the formation of several organizations that have advanced the field. As a result of this

approach, investigators have been able to continue the use of experimental studies to learn about criminal behavior to determine how the justice system can best prevent and control crime. Measuring Crime . The most compatible and individually compelling approaches are descriptive inference, experimental, citation and content analysis. A good quantitative study of crime needs a reliable source of descriptive information (Siegel, 2000). However, it is very hard to draw conclusions from descriptions. Criminal activity happens in secret and a lot of crimes aren’t even reported. It is because of this gap in data, relying only on government records can potentially lead to inaccurate or incomplete conclusions. Despite the lack of validity in descriptive analysis, criminologists still utilize this method to learn how procedures, laws, and life experiences affect criminal behavior. Criminologists can use content analysis to conduct a methodical evaluation of a text, such as a journal entry, note to a friend and various other written works. It is frequently utilized to discover patterns among assorted pieces of work. Why accuracy is crucial Accurately and effectively measuring crime is a criminologist's primary duty. Crime measurement and research are what will enable preventing future criminal activities. Without an accurate measurement and analysis of crime and criminal activities, law enforcement agencies cannot assume where additional patrols and officers are needed. "By utilizing sophisticated statistical techniques to predict where crimes will occur, law enforcement agencies can designate patrol officers accordingly" (Siegel, 2018).
