RSCH 201 4/16/2024 Research 201 Research Purpose and Overview The study called “The role of praying for the spouse and sanctification of marriage in reducing infidelity” done by Neda Rayesh &Seyed Mohammad Kalantar was conducted in 2018. The purpose of this study was to determine how prayer for the spouse and sanctification reduces infidelity in marriage. The theories used for this study were stated as follows, “There is a significant relationship between sanctification and marriage and infidelity”, and the second was “There is significant relationship between prayer for the spouse and infidelity.” The question to be answered in this study was whether or not religious practice and beliefs have any relation to infidelity in marriage, in this case, specifically Iranian families. Methods and Research Quantitative research is being used in this study. This is because the researchers are conducting statistics and data, also using numerical data to get the best effective results. The researchers used questionaries to gain information about the chosen groups for this study. The research design used in the study is the “Casual Comparative Design.” Casual comparative looks to identify the relationship between independent and dependent variables. The researchers’ goal is to determine whether the independent variable affected the outcome… used to identify cause-effect relationship. ( Hark, 2019) To analyze the data, the correlation coefficient and regression analysis were used. (Rayesh & Kalantar 2018) The data collection methods used for this study were questionnaires and scales. The questionnaire used a scale that ranged from “strongly agree” to “strongly disagree”,
RSCH 201 to measure adults’ perception on God in marriage. The highest score of (91) in the questionnaire showed a bigger belief in the manifestation of God in marriage. Whereas the lowest score (13) showed smaller belief in the manifestation of God in marriage. Another method of data collection used in this study was the Partner-Focused Prayer Measure by Finchman et al. (2010) This method asked questions such as “I pray for the well being of my spouse.” and “I ask God to watch over my spouse.” This measure used a scale from “never” to “always”. The “always” is a sign for the highest amount of prayer for the spouse, while “never” would be the lowest amount of prayer for their spouse. The last method of data collection was to assess infidelity, an 11-item measure developed by Drigotas, Safstrom, and Gentilia (1999) measuring emotional and sexual infidelity was used. (Rayesh & Kalantar 2018) Confidentiality was ensured to the participants answers during this study. This questionnaire was used to measure the level of attraction. With questions such as “How attractive did you find this person?”, as well as “How physically intimate were you with this person?” The scale ranged from the highest score (99) meaning there was a high probability of marital infidelity. On the opposite side was the lowest score (0), meaning there was a low probability of marital infidelity. Findings, Discussion, and Future Research The analyses used to analyze the data in study were the correlation coefficient and the regression analysis. The regression analysis was used to see if prayer and sanctification in a marriage could predict the couple’s involvement in
RSCH 201 infidelity. Again, the hypothesis the study was testing was whether there was a significant relationship between God in marriage and infidelity. At the end of the study, it was revealed that the higher the score of sanctification of marriage, the lower the level of couples’ involvement in infidelity and vice versa. (Rayesh& Kalantar 2018) As well as the higher level of prayer for the spouse there were lower levels of the couple’s involvement in infidelity. In the study, Rayesh & Kalantar explained “that as the score of sanctification of marriage and prayer for the spouse increases, more reduction in marital infidelity can be predicted.” As a result of the study that was conducted in Iran it was confirmed that although countries and culture are different, spirituality ultimately has the same effect on infidelity of married couples. There were limitations to this study due too not being able to have complete confidence in the relationship between spirituality and marriage without experimental data. The authors did make suggestions for future research. In future studies, it is recommended to collect data from two members of a dyad and to conduct quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods research. ( Rayesh & Kalantar 2018) Original Summary In summary, the study “The Role of Praying for the Spouse and Sanctification of Marriage in Reducing Infidelity” was conducted by Neda Rayesh & Seyed Mohammad Kalantar in Iran, and it was published in 2018. The study was to determine the relationship between spirituality and prayer for a spouse in marriage and how it relates to marital infidelity. Infidelity in marriages is at an all-time high. Strong data was conducted in this study using the quantitative research method.
