GOVT 2306 Discussion Questions Is book banning about education or politics?  Is it about censorship, protection, values, ideas, or control?  Banning books can be related to censorship. The core to banning books is to remove certain ideas and/or content from all such as government officials, libraries, schools and the list continues as they are censoring these specific books. In my opinion, banning books is about control due to the lack of prohibition claims. It does not allow one’s own beliefs and no open discussion is allowed, therefore limiting all from knowledge whether it’s being used or not. Could this be a violation of the First Amendment? Do people work against book banning?  Are they as organized as those who would ban books?  Book banning to many who are against it would say it is a violation of the First Amendment. Book banning is very organized as they are trying to censor and overturn the book. It can take a lot to challenge this as it would require an appeals process. Banning books and reinstating the book to be on shelves are both organized processes that require dedicated time and support from each party. However, to remove a book could be quite a challenge just as much as it is to fight for it as well. What do book bans actually accomplish?   Book bans accomplish a suppression of freedom of speech due to the interference of self- thinking and free speech. However, the other side of what book bans accomplish for those who are for it is a form of protection from what the author is writing and eliminating the message that this author is attempting to get across. It reduces dialogues, groups and viewpoints. Banning books may help with restricting children from reading certain words that are not suitable for their age group. Offensive language would be a factor that we can consider. Does anyone think that they are “protecting” children from something in those books?  Can’t students go to county and city libraries and get the banned books?  If students can afford to buy the books they can get them at any book store.  So keeping children away from books isn’t really the goal.  The books are still available in stores?  Are parents who never think about book banning aware that books are banned from school libraries?  There are certain explicit material that children should not be reading such as language, violence, and other material not suitable. Students can absolutely go to any county and city library and request the banned book as the public libraries continue to carry the banned books listed in
schools. Ultimately keeping children away from books is limited. You may walk into a store such as Barnes and Noble as request if they have a banned books section and request help to locate a banned book in the store for reading and purchase. Parents are most likely not aware that books are being banned from the school libraries and quite frankly, in my opinion, it may not come to a parents mind when choosing their child’s school being that they trust the school district to automatically have the best interest in the child. Do you read?   Why not?  Do you read in your classes?  Do you read for pleasure? At this time, I read to study and read to gain knowledge in subjects I am studying in. I do not read a personal book besides the ones that I receive from my college courses. What is the impact of the lack of reading on our society, our politics, our personal lives? There could be a social impact due the limited availability. One could possibly suffer from low self-esteem due to the illiteracy. Reading is great for enhancing a positive effect in your brain, consider reading as fuel for your brain. Books shape our beliefs and enhance our skills. Reading books helps us grow psychologically, it affects us mentally and emotionally as the brain is a muscle as it takes in what we feed it. References Free Speech Center. (2024, April 11).
