Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory acknowledges that the child’s relationships are affected by multiple levels of surroundings including family to friends even country you live in. Bronfenbrenner divided the person's environment into five di erent systems: ff  the microsystem, the mesosystem, the exosystem, the macrosystem, and the chronosystem. The ecological systems theory cannot be understood without understanding how it applies to our lives. The microsystem includes parents, friends, neighbors, and siblings. The mesosystem encompasses the interactions between one's microsystems, such as the interactions between me and my parents. The exosystem consists of formal and informal social structure indirectly influence us as they affect one of the microsystems (Hayes, O'Toole, & Halpenny, 2017). For example, our neighbor having a party until 2am every day will affect the family including children who need to wake up early in the morning to go to school. The macrosystem is a very interesting component of Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory. It helps us understand how a child’s development is affected by access to healthcare, lawlessness, socioeconomic status, wealth, poverty, and ethnicity. The chronosystem consists of all the environmental changes that occur over the lifetime which influence development such as major life transitions like first day of school, and historical events like COVID-19 pandemic (Bronfenbrenner & Evans, 2000). Understanding how your personal beliefs are shaped base upon your personal experiences and believes verses how others grow up is very important for social workers to understand. For example, I grow up in third world country and I am always very aware of importance of education and how socioeconomic status would give you access to medical specialist versus hospital in your country which may not even have basic medications let along the lifesaving medications on stock. Not to mention most children who grow up in these countries are never vaccinated because of lack of access. Understanding diversity and inequality can significantly impact the quality of a social worker’s professional life where you are able to better advocate, access and facilitate change if you know what the root causes of stressors are.
