A violator of norms such as a characteristic or belief that causes a negative reaction within a culture. 2. What is the Symbolic Interactionist Perspective of Deviance? The symbolic interactionist perspective of deviance is an argument based upon deviance's relevance meaning what might be considered deviant in one group may not be deviant in a different group. 3. What is the Functionalist Perspective of Deviance? The functionalist perspective of deviance is the argument that deviance serves a positive social function by clarifying moral boundaries and promoting social cohesion. In short, it helps society establish correct and incorrect behavior to establish social norms. 4. What is the Conflict Perspective of Deviance? The conflict perspective of deviance is a belief that a society's inequalities are measured in deviance resulting in the less powerful to be criminalized. This could help certain groups remain in power. 5. Make a list of 5 deviant behaviors that you witness in an average week. Make sure you write enough to give an idea of what the behavior is. If you need ideas try using the internet to search Deviance Examples and try to apply them to situations you encounter. A. While shopping in a store, multiple times, I have encountered someone slipping a product or clothing item... etc., into their bag and then leaving without paying. B. One time my dog ran down a street, complete accident, and there was a person at the end of the street who just kicked my dog even though she wasn’t a threat. C. One time I was in Chicago on the subway and near some stairs to the streets were some dudes who were clearly smoking a lot of some substance.
D. I have witnessed some people write inappropriate words on my elementary's school bathroom walls. E. One time I was with my dad in a very sketchy area of Phoenix and some guys were beating up a homeless guy. 6. Identify and explain a movie, television series, or book where a deviant behavior is central to the plot. Explain the behavior and how it is considered Deviant. A movie that has deviant behavior central to the plot would be The Breakfast Club. For the most part you could say The Breakfast Club contains a good amount of assault. One example of this is when Andrew taped his classmates' cheeks together. This is considered deviant because it is a form of assault as the classmate was “injured” in the process. 7.
