We have repeatedly affirmed the position of the Church in unalterably opposing all abortions, except in two rare instances: When conception is the result of forcible rape and when competent medical counsel indicates that a mother’s health would otherwise be seriously jeopardized.” Doctrine & Covenants Section 59:6 “Thou shalt not … kill, nor do anything like unto it” Conclusion Abortion has been a topic of debate since perhaps the beginning of humankind. The world is surrounded by voices and perspectives that are contrary to the position of the church (ie. Chris Rock and his recent comedy tour: “Selective Outrage.”). It is clear that abortion is a form of murder and is a last resort - only under instances of rape and or incest, health of the mother, or severe defects to the uterus/child could abortion be considered an acceptable option. Attempting to escape the realities of parenthood for convenience and to hide up sinful behavior is an abomination and not free of negative consequences – both eternally and temporarily. The church has discussed abortion with less frequency as the topic has become a more taboo on a political level, however with recent “outrage” from the supreme court’s overturning of Roe V Wade, the church has further reaffirmed their stance on the matter. The Church Newsroom hosts a published official statement that confirms this stance as “unchanging” and even encourages members who feel comfortable lobbying to prevent states from enacting change in favor of abortion. The church does not specify a time frame by which an abortion can be enacted without sinning. As soon as conception has happened, parenthood kicks in, a duty which must be taken with the utmost seriousness. The church recommends that if the family or single parent is unable to care for them, there are plenty of adoption agencies and other methods that prevent the child’s life from being taken before he/she even had a chance.
