Gracious H. Harpole 1 REL 1301: New Testament Unit 3 LBC Reading Response Questions ***Read the Lutheran Bible Commentary pgs. 175-177. Respond to the following 3 questions with answers that are no less than 150 words each. Answers must be based on and reference content from the assigned reading. 1. What is the origin and meaning of the word "Gospel" and how did the Christians adopt and use this term? The word Gospel is originally an ancient word that Christians had adopted from using it to describe a special meaning to them (Engelbrecht, 2014, p. 175). The original meaning of the word Gospel was the honorarium to the individual who brought the good news, and then it would go on to have the special meaning of the good news by itself (Engelbrecht, 2014, p. 175). The Christians related the word to the meaning of Jesus Christ and that this would mean that the good news was only meant to be proudly proclaimed and spoken of in the power of the Holy Spirit (Engelbrecht, 2014, p. 175). The word Gospel continues in the present as an enlightening and highly spirited form of faith for Christians to follow and celebrate their love of Jesus Christ. It would also go on to be a form of celebration whenever Christians initially utilized this word to proclaim that the good news is here and alive with us. 2. What makes the Christian "Gospels" different from other ancient writings and how were they different from other ancient biographies? The Christian Gospels are a set of four accounts of the coming of Jesus Christ into the world and all of the enlightening events that took place to show proof of God’s word and teachings. When the Christian Gospels were created, at that time there was nothing similar or exactly like them that had been written previously (Engelbrecht, 2014, p. 175). There were previously written forms of acts of heroism in the Bible but there was not anything that specifically detailed the beautiful events that occurred in Jesus’s life. The reason the Christian Gospels are so important is because without Jesus Christ there would have never been God’s example of true unconditional love for his believers and followers have ever been forgiven by God because he did not send down his son to be sacrificed and reborn to teach people about Christianity. The Christian Gospels are also historical writings that account for Jesus’s actions by reflecting on both parts of Jesus speaking his last words to his disciples (Engelbrecht, 2014, p. 177). 3. Why are the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, & John) not history books the way we understand them? How did the Gospels use history to make a larger point about Jesus? The Gospels are written on account of the four most devoted Apostles who were meant to tell the story of Jesus Christ in similar but different accounts of his timeline and the important events that made the way for all of humanity to learn from to live by God’s beautiful word. The
Gracious H. Harpole 1 REL 1301: New Testament Unit 3 LBC Reading Response Questions Gospels believed that historical sequence is, “the clothing in which the Messiah of God comes so that He may be revealed and may enter people’s lives as the present and potent Christ (Engelbrecht, 2014, p. 177)”. This explains how truly deep the meaning of biblical history is for Christians to take into their heart and souls since the Gospel teaches his followers what events took place to build their faith with a remarkable foundation of God’s word. The Gospels used history to make a significant point about their account of Jesus’s words, teachings, and actions (Engelbrecht, 2014, p. 177). Engelbrecht, E. A. (2014).
