IR #2 THE ECONOMY OF THE KINGDOM OF GOD Alec Moseley Read Higton pgs 77- top of 84 and respond: (REMEMBER TO PUT THE PAGE NUMBER(S) FROM WHICH YOU DERIVED YOUR ANSWER IN PARENTHESES) 1. What are the two “patterns” Higton says we must attend to as being found in the gospels; ones that step us towards the doctrine of the Trinity. (4 pts) Pattern 1: (78) “The first and most important step in the journey that leads to the doctrine of the Trinity is, however, a step away from abstraction.” Pattern 2: (81) “In order to take a second step towards the doctrine of the Trinity, there is another pattern that we must attend to in the Gospel narratives: that by who the Father directs our attention to Jesus of Nazareth, and by doing so, Defines himself as the Father of this Son.” 2. After reading the section, what do you think Higton means by the word “economy” in relation to God? (He uses the term on p. 77) (2 pts) I believe he could mean it as a way of explaining the world us Christians have built up. That we have created and “economy,” in a sense, that revolves around our faith and the commitment to God the Father we make. 3. As you may remember from Bib Lit, Israelites were committed monotheists who cast out or killed people for claiming to be God/divine/objects of worship. How does this connect with Higton’s “key point” (84) that “Jesus became a focus for devotion early in the history of Christianity” (remember the early church was comprised of many Israelites)? Why is that important in discussing the nature of God? (4 pts)
I believe the way Bib Lit connects with the key point in this reading is that even though there may have been people claiming to be the son of God the Father; Jesus seemed to have a following behind him like no other and did things that was divine proof that he is the Son of God. Though I am slightly confused by the wording of the question “nature of God.” I think it may be important because by Jesus creating such a following, and faith around him. It showed that God was moving through Him.
