More specifically, you will be studying the story of Lydia in Acts 16:6-15. You will use the template below in order to complete a study of this passage. In your study, you will use the skills of Observation that you have become familiar with through your reading in Everyday Bible Study . Observation A. I have read Acts 16:6-15 in both a formal translation (KJV, NKJV, NASB, ESV, or CSB) and a functional translation (NIV, NLT, or NCV). Highlight the correct answer. o Yes o No B. Having read the passage in both formal and functional translation, list at least 2 similarities and 3 differences between the way both translations cover this story. You may list as many similarities and differences that you find as long as you meet the minimum amount. Do not use King James for the formal translations. a. Similarity – Both versions say that Paul had a vision and following that he very quickly went to Macedonia. b. Similarity – The course of the text in both translations in the same. The wording does have differences, but the overall concept is the same. c. Difference – The KJV and NIV has different sayings when they tried to enter Bithynia. NIV says, “The Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to”. However, the KJV says, “Spirit suffered them not”.
d. Difference - When Paul tried to preach in Asia, the two texts had different responses. NIV said they had “been kept by the Holy Spirit”. The KJV states that they had been “forbidden”. e. Difference - The NIV version said the words are of the Holy Spirit, but the KJV version says it is told as the Holy Ghost. C. Identify the basic elements of the story you are studying 1. Main characters: (List them) Paul Lydia Paul’s Companions 2. Plot: (50-100 words) Paul and his companions traveled through Galatia and Phrygia but were unable to enter Asia on half of the Holy Spirit. Instead, they went to Troas and while there Paul had a vision of a man needing help in Macedonia. Paul and his companions travel to Macedonia and on the sabbath they go to the river right by the city and speak to woman that were there. Lydia who was one of the women there, replies to this message and gets her and her household baptized. She then asks Paul and his companions to join their household. 3. Story structure: (50-100 words) Note: Plot and Story Structure are not the same thing (see the tutorial and student example) Exposition : Paul and his companions are on a missionary journey after God told them not to go to Asia, so they stay in Troas. Rising Action : Paul had a vision that the Holy Spirit sent him, and it was of a man that needs help in Macedonia. Climax : Paul urgently gets up and immediately set track on the way to Macedonia. Falling Action : Paul ends up speaking a message to the woman outside of the game and then baptizes Lydia and the rest of her household. Resolution : Lydia convinces Paul and his companions to stay at her house because she told Paul she believes he is a follower of Christ so they should stay. D. List basic observations about this passage using the “Key Question” for observation. Remember to consult the list of items from the observation section in studying the Gospels in Chapter 36. This will help you be more detailed in your answers to “who,” “what,” “where,” “when,” “why,” and “how.” Please be detailed and specific.
