PSYC 6104 - A Biopsychosocial Approach to Counselling 2.2: Biopsychosocial Framework in Counselling Practice Using the readings, video, and extra research you may undertake in answering the following: How would you use a biological approach in counselling as you now understand the development of our nervous system and the chemical/hormone/genetics implications on how we think/feel and behave? 2.2 Discussion Post There is strength in understanding how things work thus, I would use the biological approach to empower clients through psychoeducation of the biology behind various techniques. For example, breathing techniques can help in stressful situations, but telling someone in distress to breathe is unhelpful. Instead, by explaining why and how breathing can help calm the nervous system, it may become easier to practice. In times of heightened anxiety or stress, our prefrontal cortex is usually impaired. This is responsible for higher order thinking such as rational thinking. When we begin to focus on our breathing, we activate our parasympathetic nervous system which is responsible for “rest and digest.” Triggering the parasympathetic nervous system regulates the body’s stress response by counterbalancing the sympathetic nervous system: the body’s “fight or flight” response (Zaccaro et al., 2018; Seppälä et al., 2020). This includes slowing the heart rate, lowering blood pressure, promoting digestion, improving cognitive function, and increasing calmness. Using the biological approach, I can empower clients through teaching them how their body works. I have always been curious about the biology behind mental health. I am curious to hear about the biology behind other techniques others practice in counselling. References Pinel, J. P. J., & Barnes, S. J. (2021). Biopsychology (11th ed.). Pearson Education.
