PSY2012 PROFESSOR CHRISTOPHER RAYE 04/21/24 Schizophrenia ( symptoms, treatment) Psychological Disorders Schizophrenia is a severe mental illness that affects thinking, feeling, and behavior. It's one of the most complicated and poorly understood mental diseases that may severely impair everyday living. Less than 1% of Americans have schizophrenia, a lifelong brain condition. The symptoms include delusions, hallucinations, disordered speech, and cognitive or motivation issues. However, medication will relieve most schizophrenia symptoms and reduce the risk of recurrence. There is no cure for schizophrenia, but science is developing safer and more effective treatments. Researchers are currently studying genetics, behavior, and brain imaging to determine the disease's etiology. In addition, this offers promise new, more effective medicines. Schizophrenia's severe symptoms and cognitive distortions respond well to CBT. Family therapy helps boost family involvement in treatment. They will better understand the illness and assist the patient. Psychosocial Therapies: Rehabilitation, employment counseling, and social skills training help schizophrenia patients become more independent and live better lives. These treatments reduce stress, improve social activities, and boost employment. Some persons have anosognosia, an impaired awareness condition that makes it challenging to get therapies owing to non-adherence, high relapse rates, and poor functioning. Therapy for anosognosia is tailored to raise awareness and acceptance. Substance use, a typical co-morbidity of schizophrenia, adds to the complexity. Both problems must be managed together for improved therapeutic outcomes. Schizophrenia treatment requires a holistic strategy that includes medical, psychological, and social assistance. This has
