Aniyah Williams HUMS 150B1 February 25, 2024 Written Response 7: Drugs in Psychotherapy Prompt: For this response, write 250+ words discussing the similarities in the use of psychedelics among modern day psychotherapists and the historical practices of Shamanism. Please use concepts of the unconscious from both Jung and Buddhist thought. While there are many differences between the ancient practices of Shamanism and modern psychotherapy, there are also some similarities. Nowadays, psychedelic medications are utilized in psychotherapy for a range of causes. Psychopharmaceuticals are always administered under the supervision of licensed therapists, in a secure environment, and in tiny amounts. A specific kind of therapy has been utilized to treat addictions and disorders, including smoking, anxiety, depression, OCD, and so on. When considering alternative states of consciousness it was formerly thought to be unhealthy and regressive. However, according to Walsh (1993), "more recent assessments have acknowledged their uniqueness and potential benefits." (p.741). According to Metzner in the reading, shamanic practices involve "non-ordinary states of consciousness induced by a variety of methods including ingesting hallucinogenic plants, but also drumming, lasting, wilderness vision questing, use of sweat lodges and others" (Metzner 1998, p.333). This is what made him aware of the therapeutic benefits of psychedelics. Small dosages of psychedelics are used in a state-controlled environment in both historical and contemporary activities. The substance is being used for spiritual or individual treatment; it is not being misused. In the Yogacara, a source of Buddhist inspiration. Eight distinct levels of consciousness comprise the condition. Dissecting each layer or a sensitive area is necessary to comprehend the unconscious. This is what gam enlightenment required the belief to happen. Upon examination, Jung's ideas are comparable. To try to determine the cause of a person's illness, they employed repression (Lecture 7a. Torowicz). Bibliography Metzner, Ralph. "Hallucinogenic Drugs and Plants in Psychotherapy and Shamanism."
