1 Community Outreach Review Latoya Randall The University of Arizona Global Campus PSY 600: Introduction to Graduate Study in Psychology Professor Annamarie Cochrane January 11, 2024
2 Free Art Center Free Art Center is an organization that provides therapeutic programs to help over 7500 children overcome their mental health issues through art to express themselves as individuals and learn how to cope with stressors, build confidence, engage in evidence-based mentoring, and engage in various other activities. Children who attend Free Art Center have been involved in some abusive situations, neglect, or dealing with homelessness. The Free Art Center has trained employees and volunteers to give support and teach children therapy to learn how to control their emotions and adapt to new environments. In addition, this organization's outreach programs provide camping and a weekly mentor program. Art is another form of expression to release aggression. Psychological Concepts The Free Art Center's psychological concepts are cognitive approach, humanistic concept, and Behavioral approach. The cognitive approach determines the person's behavior and the expectations of emotions. Children at the Free Art Center and "people in general" remember their past experiences and usually solve problems based on what they are known. The cognitive approach gives people the expression or action to rely on expectations and feelings to make decisions. The children attending these organizations rely on their feelings and emotions to decide what they know best to resolve these issues. However, they learn new techniques to overcome trauma through an art curriculum to express themselves psychologically and have a positive outlook on life. Another concept used at the Free Art Center is the humanistic concept. The humanistic concept allows children to believe in themselves and be motivated to reach their full potential. Children will gain future goals to help motivate themselves in a new direction as they learn how
3 to figure out present and future goals to accomplish. In addition, children learn quickly about who they are and their innermost feelings and why they do what they do when they explore deeply about themselves—being in a supportive environment with team leaders, volunteers, and other employees to show and teach children empowerment to make good choices in life. The final psychological concept is the behavioral approach. Children at the Free Art Center have behavioral problems that either make them act a certain way or have taught them bad habits through punishments and how they are controlled in their environments. Children begin to develop a behavioral pattern for acting out and trying to have their way, which they have learned over time. The Free Art Center teaches resilience, bravery, connection, creativity, strength, and innovation values. In addition, fundamental practices and principles for the trauma- informed approach are safety, trustworthiness and transparency, peer support, collaboration, empowerment, voice, and choice, and cultural, historical, and gender issues. Ethical Concerns Although The Free Art Center is culturally diverse, some ethical concerns can arise. For instance, attitudes can potentially form outside an individual’s awareness through experiences. Authors Garcia-Arch et al. (2021) explain that volunteers and employees may often attribute specific characteristics to all children in a group with certain qualities, such as stereotyping or prejudice due to implicit cognitive biases. Furthermore, authors Garcia-Arch et al. (2021) explain that implicit bias on behalf of the effects has contributed to behavior, especially regarding discrimination from housing, law enforcement, healthcare, and education.
