Research Breakdown Worksheet Directions: Choose one of the following two articles, and then complete the worksheet below. Be sure to write in full sentences and paragraphs and to properly cite and reference your work. Self-Serving Bias: Sanjuan, P., & Magallares, A. (2014). Coping strategies as mediating variables between self-serving attributional bias and subjective well-being. Journal of Happiness Studies, 15 (2), 442–453. Self-Regulation: Critcher, C. R., & Ferguson, M. J. (2016). “Whether I like it or not, it’s important”: Implicit importance of means predicts self-regulatory persistence and success. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 110 (6), 818–839. The full reference for your article Sanjuan, P., & Magallares, A. (2014). Coping strategies as mediating variables between self-serving attributional bias and subjective well-being. Journal of Happiness Studies, 15 (2), 442–453. https://10.0.3.239/s10902-013-9430-2. The hypothesis or research question (in your own words, not quoted). Include in-text citation. Sanjuan and Magallares’s (2014) hypothesis for their research was that there would be a positive correlation between someone’s self-severing attributional bias ( SSAB) and their personal well-being. They believed that someone with SSAB would choose positive coping mechanisms and would be better at problem solving, which in turn would make them happier in life. The researchers’ conclusion (in your own words in fully developed paragraph, not quoted). Include in-text citation. In conclusion, Sanjuan and Magallares’s (2014) research showed that there was a positive correlation between someone’s self-serving severing attributional bias ( SSAB) and their personal well-being. The results also furthered showed that there was an inverse correlation of increase of SSAB to a decrease in someone’s emotional distress. Meaning that with someone being able to believe they held an impact on the positive things in their life and a belief that the bad things in their life wasn’t their fault, it led to people being less emotionally impacted. The results also showed that it held a positive impact on people’s coping mechanisms and problem-solving skills to then increase people’s happiness and satisfaction with their lives. The study showed SSAB led to less avoidant coping mechanisms. Describe the research method in 2–3 sentences (in your own words, not quoted). Include in- 1
text citation. Sanjuan and Magallares’s (2014) research method included three different steps, the first step was to complete an attributional style questionnaire, where the participates would determine the level of negative or positive cause of an event on three 7-point scale that included stable, global and internal causes. The second step was to complete the coping operations preference enquiry, where participates would self-assess how often they would use the different 14 coping strategies on a 7-point scale in 53 questions. The third step was to complete the positive and negative schedule, where the participates answered a 20-question evaluation with either positive or negative affect on the situation. In at least one fully developed paragraph, describe how this research could apply to your professional or daily life. After reading Sanjuan and Magallares’s (2014) research, I know that I could apply it to my everyday life by being more self-aware and acknowledging that holding onto the negative things does worse than better in my life. That I could learn to embrace the positive things in my life and learn healthy coping mechanisms and problem-solving skills. By understanding that learning to confront my problems in life will help me either solve them or look at it from a better perspective instead of avoiding my problems. By learning how to change my hard situations or reevaluating them, I could increase my life satisfaction and happiness. Once I am able to learn these strategies, I will be in a better position to try to help others. 2
