2 Discrimination and Poverty People in the workforce face discrimination for a variety of reasons including sex, race, disabilities, sexual orientation, and more (Bell & Leopold, 2021). Legislation has been passed throughout history in an attempt to eradicate discrimination, but it still exists on a wide scale (Bell & Leopold, 2021). The different treatment minorities receive contributes to poverty levels through pay gaps as well as access to jobs in the first place (Bell & Leopold, 2021). This then creates issues with receiving healthcare, housing, and other things nearly all people need to live properly (ATD Fourth World, n.d.). Contributing to Poverty Minority groups do not have the same opportunities as others may have, even with the same level of education (Bell & Leopold, 2021). Minorities are often not even offered interviews, and if they are, it is for jobs that pay less and don’t require a lot of responsibility (Bell & Leopold, 2021). Due to this, these groups are often paid less and are not provided with any real opportunities to progress (Bell & Leopold, 2021). With lower wages and lesser opportunities, come a whole other myriad of problems. The types of jobs offered don’t include health insurance, or it’s unaffordable (ATD Fourth World, n.d.). This makes it nearly impossible to maintain a person’s overall health (ATD Fourth World, n.d.). These wages also lead to difficulties affording housing, bills, groceries, and childcare (ATD Fourth World, n.d.). These groups that are discriminated against often have to do anything they can to survive, which creates an increase in crime and the use of government-provided aid (ATD Fourth World, n.d.). It’s nearly impossible to climb out of poverty because the limited resources provided are only enough to scrape by.
