Compare and contrast longitudinal and cross-sectional studies of child development. Cross-sectional, or one-off, studies are not the same as longitudinal studies. The primary distinction is that longitudinal studies track the same sample of individuals over time, while cross-sectional studies interview a new sample of people each time they are conducted. Why must a toddler first develop object permanence in order to play the game of hide-and-seek? Toddlers learn the important cognitive skill of object permanence, which is the realization that things exist even when they are hidden from view. When a toddler plays hide and seek, this idea is essential because it teaches them that even when someone hides, they still exist and can be located. Describe Piaget’s processes of assimilation and accommodation. Use an example to illustrate the processes. Assimilation is the process of expanding on prior knowledge. Adapting is the act of thinking differently when something new doesn't fit. Similar to believing all birds can fly and then realizing some can't after seeing a penguin. A boy takes his younger brother’s toy and refuses to give it back. The younger brother runs crying to his father. If the father has a permissive style of parenting. How might he react? Explain your answer. When it comes to toys, a permissive parent might not be as strict. Instead of pressuring the elder brother to give back the toy, they could console the younger brother and prioritize maintaining harmony over teaching sharing.
Kara thinks that her best friend’s outfit looks bad on her. When her friend asks Kara how she likes the outfit, Kara decides to lie to the friend and say that the outfit looks good. How might Kara explain her decision to lie if she is in the preconventional stage of moral development? How might she explain it if she is in the conventional stage? Kara may have lied in the preconventional stage in order to get out of trouble or to receive a benefit, such as making her friend happy. She would lie in the traditional stage to keep the peace in society or because it is customary to avoid hurting a friend's feelings.
