Kira Fierro Dr. Matthew Ellison POLS 2306 25 October 2023 SHORT ANSWER What is sovereignty? What is the purpose of the government? Explain the origins of federalism as a part of American democracy, and the role of states in decision-making in our government. Sovereignty is the right for a country's government to "have authority over its own territory" (Unit 9 Global Governance McGraw). Each country has the power to govern itself by making its own decisions without interfering with external sources such as other countries. The primary purpose of the government is to exercise sovereignty on behalf of its citizens.Governments are established to maintain order, provide for the common defense, protect individual rights, and promote the general welfare. They achieve these goals through the enactment and enforcement of laws, ensuring justice, and addressing public needs. In essence, governments exist to safeguard the well-being and rights of their constituents. They can make their own laws for their country, govern their own people, and decide on which regulations to enforce within their borders to satisfy their country's needs. The government is in charge of all of their own countries' rules because without a government there would be pure chaos. Furthermore, the United State's government believed that creating and implementing federalism throughout the country could have a positive impact for the country and its people. Federalism was created in the Constitutional Convention of 1787 in response to the downfall of the Articles of Confederation.
Here, "Delegates from the 13 states drafted the Constitution to address the problems with the Articles of Confederation" (Walsh par. 4). Eventually, the creation of federalism in the constitution gave the country the ability to distribute power evenly between the main central government and the states. The positive outcome of this is that it created a balance in powers by not just having the main government make decisions, but also the states. States were now able to represent the U.S. Senate by having at least two senators per state to let the people in the states voice their opinions. Overall, federalism was able to balance the powers in the country to create equality. In Unit 3, you learned about political culture, and in Unit 4, you learned about political representation. First, briefly define the types of political cultures outlined by Elezar. Then, provide a few examples and explanations of representation types (such as, descriptive. proportional, Party Voting, etc.). Finally, explain how a region I political culture might affect the type of political representation used. The three different political cultures outlined by Elezar are individualistic, moralistic, and traditionalistic cultures. Each one of these has different beliefs and ideals depending not only on religion and location, but also on emotions and personalities. These three different political cultures are what make conservatism in Texas today. First off, traditionalistic cultures like to conserve what they believe is right by keeping things how they are. Traditionalistic political culture is characterized by a strong emphasis on preserving established traditions and social hierarchies. It often favors the elite and maintains a conservative approach to governance. In such regions, political representation is typically oligarchic, where a small, privileged group
