1) How Does the United Nations define Peacekeeping and give examples?
Peacekeeping, according to the UN, is "a way to help countries torn by conflict create conditions
for sustainable peace." Numerous tasks are involved in peacekeeping, such as interacting with
leaders, defending the public, and ensuring that weapons are stored away. These missions visit
violent areas in an effort to defuse tensions and facilitate communication between parties. For
example, the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) is a mission that's been
around since 1964. Its duties include monitoring potential hotspots for conflict and facilitating
communication between Greek and Turkish Cypriots in order to maintain peace on the island of
Cyprus. The work of UNFICYP promotes dialogue to find solutions to issues and lessens the
likelihood of conflicts. The United Nations hopes that peacekeeping would lessen global
disputes, promote negotiation over violence, and ensure people's safety in order to contribute to
the globalization of peace. Another example of a United Nations peacekeeping mission is the
United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH). Established in 2004, MINUSTAH
aimed to stabilize Haiti and foster a secure environment conducive to sustainable development
and democratic governance. The mission involved efforts to promote political stability, uphold
the rule of law, protect civilians, and support the Haitian government in its reconstruction efforts
following periods of political turmoil and natural disasters.
2) What is the United Nations' definition of Peacebuilding? Please give examples.
According to the United Nations, peacebuilding means doing many things to help places that
have had fights become peaceful and stay that way. It involves making sure people in
communities get along better and have systems in place to keep peace going. For example, in
Sierra Leone after a big war, the United Nations helped former fighters become part of regular
life again and build trust among people. Similarly, in Colombia, after many years of fighting,
efforts focused on talking to everyone involved, fixing old problems, and making big changes to
make peace last. As the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission says, "Peacebuilding
involves a range of measures targeted to reduce the risk of lapsing or relapsing into conflict by
strengthening national capacities at all levels for conflict management, and to lay the foundation
for sustainable peace and development." These examples show how important it is for
communities to work together, supported by the world, to keep peace after hard times.
3) Of the two terms mentioned in questions #1 and #2 Which do you think would apply here in
the United States and why?
In my opinion, peacebuilding is more relevant to the United States context than peacekeeping.
While the United States may not be involved in traditional peacekeeping missions like those seen
in international conflicts, it faces internal challenges that necessitate efforts to address social
divisions, systemic injustices, and promote reconciliation within society. Peacebuilding
initiatives align with the long-term goals of fostering sustainable peace and addressing root
