EVIDENCE LOG #2
Chapter 2 – Power and Legitimacy
The purpose of this assignment is to apply the concepts addressed in the text to the country you
chose to study this term.
●
This log is slightly different from the one you completed last week. All three types of
legitimacy are not likely to be found in one country, so you are not being asked to apply
each concept to your country. Instead, the application piece of this assignment is listed as
a separate question below the evidence log. Please do not neglect to answer it!
1. Please complete the Evidence Log below.
CONCEPT
DEFINITIONS/EXPLANATIONS
●
Find supporting evidence
in the TEXTBOOK
to answer
the question/define the terms. In addition to the
definition, please also explain/analyze the term in your
own words.
●
Please include direct quotations
from the textbook
in
each box.
●
NO outside sources
may be used in this column.
●
Points will be taken off if the textbook is not used
and/or if other sources are used.
CHARISMATIC LEGITIMACY
What is the meaning of this concept?
“Built on the force of ideas and the presence of the leader;
weakly institutionalized. Example - Revolutionary hero Vladimir
Ilyich Lenin”
(O’Neil). In a charismatic system, the leader's
appeal can be described as rooted in their extraordinary
qualities, compelling vision, or persuasive communication
skills. In short, this type of legitimacy is characterized by its
reliance on a dynamic leader, their powerful ideas, and a
relative lack of formal institutionalization, making it a unique
but potentially unstable form of authority. Characteristics
present in the USSR during the early rule of Vladimir Lenin as
mentioned earlier.
TRADITIONAL LEGITIMACY
What is the meaning of this concept?
“Built by habit and custom over time, stressing history; strongly
institutionalized. Example - Monarch Queen Elizabeth II”
(O’Neil). I’d definitely agree with this summary, expanding on
the definition by emphasizing the importance structures play
in the world to the functioning of society and are typically
upheld and respected in Traditional States. Examples can
include monarchies like the UK, Bhutan, Spain and Oman with
established lines of succession or religious institutions with
clear hierarchies and rituals
RATIONAL-LEGAL LEGITIMACY
What is the meaning of this concept?
“Built on rules and procedures and the offices that create and
enforce those rules; strongly institutionalized. Example - Elected
executive Donald Trump”
(O’Neil). This definition is very
interesting to me, because Rational-Legal Legitimacy can be
applied to a wide variety of States. On one hand it can be the
basis for a democratic system, with the legitimacy of the
government being based on a constitution that outlines the
rules for governance, the separation of powers and ensures
equality under the Law. At the same time, Rational-Legal
Legitimacy can also exist under an Authoritarian State, where
the rules and Laws that govern it are so institutionalized that it
creates an efficient able to keep the regime in power.
2. Application – Which form of legitimacy is currently present in your chosen state?
Choose ONE form only - the form of legitimacy that best describes your country NOW.
While there are many ways to describe and analyze the government that rules over China, its
most simple form of legitimacy would be labeled as "Rational-Legal Legitimacy." The country
operates under a one-party system led by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), with its
legitimacy largely built on the legal framework established in the early rule of Mao Zadong and
refined by Deng Xiaoping. The Chinese government claims legitimacy through the constitution
and laws it has put in place, and emphasizes the importance of maintaining stability, economic
growth, and social order as key elements of its legitimacy. According to Pitman Potter,
“by
relying on the socialist legal system as a source of legitimacy, the regime also strengthened its
ability to justify specific actions by reference to law
(Baogang)
.”
