Post-Course Reflection - Kris Movalia
4/27/2023
1. Think back to where you started in this course and reflect on where you are as opposed to
where you started.
I can reflect that I have come a long way since I started. I knew how the American Government
operated, but I still kept finding more and more to learn. With this new information expanding
my knowledge, I feel even better navigating the American Governmental and political structures.
2. Analyze the trips taken and choose two or three favorites. Explain why you chose them.
The American Revolution marked a crucial turning point in the development of democracy since
it resulted in the creation of the United States and the adoption of its Constitution, which
established a form of government based on the ideals of democracy, republicanism, and
federalism. Another significant occasion was the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s, which
opposed racial segregation and discrimination and resulted in the adoption of legislation
defending all citizens civil rights and voting rights.
3. Reflect on your new skills in navigating the American Governmental and political structures.
How will you connect with your government and the political structures in society in the future?
I work in the IT department for a local government, and I occasionally have to be in charge of
running the local city council & planning commission meetings from the back end, so the
audience that’s physically present and online gets a seamless experience. By attending/being in
charge, I have educated myself on how the local government works and ways I can participate in
it which I never knew before. I have learned how the officials think about items that are being
disused, how it impacts the community, and much more. There are public hearing sections that
are reserved so that if any citizen wants to address their concerns or comments about an item that
is being discussed, they can do so. This new skill allows me to put my voice out there and be
heard.
4. With this new information you have now acquired, do you feel empowered to make change in
society? If so, why? If not, why not?
Knowledge of how government works, how policies are made, and how to engage with elected
officials feels absolutely game changing because by voting, participating in civic activities, and
advocating for social justice, I can contribute to positive social change. It helps build and sustain
cohesive communities, improve outcomes, ensure access and community empowerment, help
local governments promote sustainable decisions, drive social transformation, and deepen
democracies.
5. What, if any social change is important to you and why? How might you now contribute to
that change?
In order to enhance people's lives and advance equality and justice, social structures, institutions,
and ideals must change. This is referred to as social change. Ending discrimination based on
race, gender, sexual orientation, and other variables, tackling climate change and environmental
degradation, and lowering poverty and inequality are only a few significant social improvements.
I can support groups that work on these issues, speak out for laws that advance equality and
justice, volunteer in my community, go to town hall meetings, and take personal measures to
lessen my impact on the environment and advance social justice.
