Chapter 4 Critical Thinking Questions 4.1-4.5 Alex Pagel 9/22/2023 Critical Thinking Questions 4.1 How important do you think conscious thinking is in human behavior in general and for Dan Lee in particular? What do you think of Daniel Kahneman’s thesis that we place too much confidence in the rationality of our judgments? Conscious thinking is important to human behavior because it is what someone is actively doing. If someone is conscious of their thoughts and actions, then those are solely the person’s responsibility. Dan Lee was not conscious of his personal growth with his social worker, but he was conscious of his social worker trying to help him. I believe that conscious thinking is important for Dan Lee because even if he has made growth, he still has the same mindset of disrespect versus disagreement. He might have grown but since it was unconscious growth, he doesn’t actively recognize his growth and can revert to his previous mindset. He needs to recognize his flaws and consciously overcome them. I believe that Daniel Kahneman is correct in his thesis. People tend to believe that what they know is correct and if someone challenges that then they are wrong. We see this with Dan Lee when he believes that everyone around him is irrational, and he is rational. No one likes to admit when they are wrong or that the “rationality of their judgments” is incorrect because we have so much confidence in being in the right. Critical Thinking Questions 4.2 We have looked at three types of theories of emotion: physiological theories, psychological theories, and social theories. What did you find most interesting about these different ways of thinking about emotion? Which ideas did you find most appealing? Most convincing? Explain. Which ideas were least convincing? Explain. I found it interesting that both our physical reaction and thought process can have an equal effect on our emotions and how we interpret situations. I found the psychological theory the most appealing because I personally feel like my interpretation of a situation is more of an influence on my emotions. This is also why I believe it to be the most convincing of the three theories. If I interpret a situation as sad or frightening, then I tend to feel sad or frightened. The least convincing of the three would be the physiological theories. I understand how it holds merit, but I believe that even if your body responds in a way it depends on how you psychologically interpret these effects. If your hands get clammy and your breathing picks up you could be nervous, scared, or even excited, I believe that it is more how you interpret the situation than it is how your body responds, to an extent. I am not saying that the physiological theory doesn’t hold merit I just believe that compared to the other two it is less convincing.
Critical Thinking Questions 4.3 How important is culture in influencing the nature of the self? How important do you think it is for your sense of self? For Dan Lee’s sense of self? What are the policy implications of research on the impact of early nurturing on human development? Give some thought to social identity theory. With what social groups do you identify? How did you come to identify with these groups? How might your social identities affect your social work practice? I believe that culture is very important in influencing oneself. If your culture told you that you had a specific role that you had to play, and others had a different role I believe that will affect how you react to situations. It is also important to someone’s sense of self, not only by feeling like they are a part of something, but it can also affect how you see yourself. For Dan Lee, his culture told him that as the only man in his household, it was his responsibility to take care of his sister and mother. This gave his sense of self a leadership role but also put added stress on himself. The policy implications of research on the impact of human development are that it is important to raise children in a safe and happy environment otherwise they can grow up to develop health issues and partake in harmful activities. My social groups would be my family and my friend group. I was born into my family which shaped my worldview on both religion and race, having a non-traditional mixed family. My friend group I gained through school and work through similar interests, upbringing, and most also being a part of the LGBT community like me. My social groups can affect my social work practice by making me biased towards similar situations but I believe that they also gave me a wider outlook on life outside of what I would have gotten if I was raised by an all-white family and wasn’t LGBT. Critical Thinking Questions 4.4 Why do you think we easily get diverted from thinking about societal conditions that create stress and come, instead, to focus on helping individuals cope with stress? How does such an approach fit with social work’s commitment to social justice? I believe that it is easier to help an individual overcome their stress than to fix the issue causing said stress so to help the person experiencing the stress we only focus on them rather than the overall big picture. It fits with social work's commitment to social justice because we are still helping people, but it limits the amount of social justice that we can implement. If we ended up fixing the bigger issue, we would help everyone, but it would take longer than if we helped those currently experiencing the stress. The people experiencing the stress could end up feeling worse and not receiving the proper help if they end up focusing on the bigger picture. We help who we can when we can despite there being a bigger problem. Critical Thinking Questions 4.5 What biases do you have about how people should cope with discrimination based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and so on? How might the coping strategy need to change in
