Courney Beauchamp Courtney, you bring up a great point about being hesitant to use prayer as the first therapeutic approach. Rather looking into her view about how humans handle sin first. She does give us information in the case study. Letting us know that she feels that she cannot continue with her church due to her sin. Understanding this helps us to better assist the client and explore her beliefs of could and her relationship with God. I appreciate your interpretation of scripture as well. You took a different approach to counseling Chichima than I did. I honestly did not think that she might interpret scripture differently than I. It makes sense though because scripture can be subjective depending on the individual and emotional state they are in. This is something that I will consider moving forward with client’s, making sure that I consider their perspectives. I agree with you that we must confess our sins. If we share our sins God will forgive us and wash away our sin ( New International Version Bible , 1978/2011, 1 John 1:9). Being able to confess her sins will help Chichima open that door for conversation around her values and morals. Not being able to express our emotions and internalizing them leads to increased rates of depression (Katz 2019). I also agree with you that creating trust is important when trying to help clients heal. Without them trusting us to listen with an open mind they often will not tell us their struggles or pain. Jacob Jenkins Jacob, I agree with you that forgiveness is important with trying to heal. From the case study it sounds like Chichima is holding on to all of her pain and forgiving herself can be helpful to restart her relationships God. This is a good first step before moving directly into prayer. This would help us to understand the pain that Chichima is going through. I believe that scripture can also help the patient in having a better understanding about God, his view of forgiveness, and transformation. Praying for others and confessing our sins to others helps us heal ( New International Version Bible , 1978/2011, James 5:16). I would be curious to explore if the patient has scriptures that have helped her in the past. I think leaning on this would help to open the door for other scriptures to be used. Trying to connect with the patient in something that she already believes in and understands build trust. Prayer can help us connect with God (Hawkins & Clinton,2015). I agree with you to use caution when interacting with Chichima. I would not want to force her into changing her views or accepting something that she does not believe in. I believe that it is a fine line that we walk as counselors. We must be careful not to cause Chichima to withdraw during the session. I think having the trust with the Chichima to discuss these delicate conversations is important. Thank you for your discussion. References Hawkins, R. E., & Clinton, T. E. (2015).
