The Royal Game of Ur was created sometime between 2600 and 2400 BC. The game was discovered by Leonard Woolley in the 1920s while he was exploring in the ancient city of Ur. Describe basic gameplay mechanics (i.e. how the game is played, but a complete explanation of rules is NOT required) The Royal Game of Ur is a racing game. The game is typically played with 4 different types of “dice” that have 2 possible outcomes. Depending on what is rolled, you can move one of your tokens a number of spaces. It is also possible to roll a 0, skipping your turn. There are also little flower symbols that are “safe spaces” and additionally allow you to take another turn. The goal of the game is to get all 7 of your pieces off the track. Describe the gameplay aesthetics (i.e. what is the appeal of the game, what feelings would it create for players?) The Royal Game of Ur is a racing game that can be very competitive. The ability to send your opponents pieces gives a sense of importance to each of your moves, and therefore makes the game very strategic. Players must decide whether to bring out new pieces, capture an opponents piece, or get to a safe spot and stay there each turn. What mixture of luck and strategy does this game employ? This game has a luck element in that each turn is dictated by a dice roll or coin flip. The strategy element comes with the decisions of whether to advance pieces, attack pieces, or stay in safe zones. What board games (ancient or modern) are similar to The Royal Game Of Ur? Describe the similarities. This game is very similar to the game Senet in terms of racing and the ability to capture other pieces. Other modern games that have these same mechanics are games like Sorry! And Parcheesi. In your opinion, what does this game have to do with modern computer games? Most modern games have some type of RNG in them. These games typically use luck to add fairness to the game, so that a lesser player still has a chance against a greater player. However, in The Royal Game of Ur having a good strategy going into the game gives the player a better edge. The same can be said with most modern competitive video games.
