Week 2 Discussion Week 2 Discussion Option B After I watched Prof Louanne Myers evaluate the students' addition skills. The student demonstrated strength in adding any number by 0 and 1. She used specific strategies, such as knowing that adding any number by 0 equals the same number and adding any number by 1 equals the next number. She also used her fingers to aid in adding numbers together. When Professor Louanne asked her how she got the answer, she explained that when faced with 10+4, she put 10 in her head and counted four more. She is good at using her hands to count, but she needs more practice to count quickly. Pro. Louanne asked the student what her favorite subject at school was, and she said she liked math, number talk, and physical education. She likes to share her ideas and said problem-solving is the hard part for her. She prefers asking a friend for help first and then asking the teacher if she still needs assistance. To improve her math skills, the student needs help mastering sums between 2 and 20 so she can answer them quickly and accurately. Repeating addition every day can improve her fluency in counting and adding numbers. Developing fact fluency is a crucial step toward advanced mathematical thinking. Students can understand and solve higher-level math concepts faster by learning math facts. However, differentiated teaching is a method that helps teachers work with students to solve basic problems quickly and accurately so that they can focus on more challenging, higher-level math skills such as problem-solving. Calendar activities, one of the eight daily routines outlined in Technology-Infused Math Instruction: Thinking Outside the Box on page 75, 2021, would effectively help students improve their fluency. Calendar activities help students build number sense and patterns using the date. In my experience working with students in a kindergarten classroom, before getting into my student teaching, the teacher asked me to use calendar time to teach students how to count using ten frames and straws. Every day, I would have the students sit on the carpet and count the current day of the month. I also used the straws to make a bundle of ten, filling the ten frames. Once a student reaches ten, the student starts with ten again the next day and moves on to 11. The ten frames helped students visualize the remaining days until we reached ten. It also helped teach concepts such as odd and even, counting on, composing, and decomposing. Visual learning using objects supports students in their learning needs, which aligns with (UDL Checkpoint 1.3); provide physical objects and spatial models to convey perspective or interaction. Morning warm-up will be another strategy by filling a worksheet (Crack the Code by teacher pay teacher) This activity is aligned with the Common Core Standard CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.OA. A.1 involves " representing addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings1, sounds (e.g., claps), acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations.” In the case of the ten frames used in calendar time, this standard is met as the students are representing addition with objects (straws) and mental images (ten frames).
