Hackensack Innovation Assessment Worksheet (Assignment 2) Instructions: Complete a brief analysis that includes a description of the Hackensack innovation, a determination of the type of innovation, and Herzlinger’s six-factor analysis to assist in assessing the potential impact of the Hackensack innovation using Miller’s Impact Assessment Framework. 1. Describe the innovation. Describe the innovation and the problem it addresses. Hackensack innovation was formed to monitor patients of different medical backgrounds and it showed reduction in readmission rates. 2. Determine the type of innovation. Determine and justify whether the innovation is sustaining or disruptive. In my perceptive it is both sustaining and disruptive. - Data automatically uploaded to EMR. - Requirement of Wi-Fi and it sends alerts to medical stuff immediately. - Reduction in readmission rates in individuals that used the monitor compared to general population. - The monitor could be used in patients with different medical history. 3. Analyze the innovation. Complete a six-factor analysis of the innovation (based on Herzlinger’s “Innovating in Health Care—Framework”). Structure Who is a friend? Who is a foe? How much power do they have to help or hurt the new venture? Tablets given to patients to monitor their health. Financing How is the innovation reimbursed? Does the innovation use appropriate sources for financing? What are those sources? HRS funded the pilot program and the ACO received a grant from Verizon to pay for the first year of the tablet use once the pilot ended. Financial impact is great because it costs $300 to keep patient on the program for 90 days. This program was found to beneficial due to reduction of readmission patients experienced. ( ‘Hackensack Alliance Accountable Care Organization.”) Public Policy How relevant is each variable in directing public policy for the problem the innovation addresses? Examples of variables include political environment, stakeholder dynamics, regulatory and legislative process dynamics, and biases of key policy makers. This innovation helps patients in the perspective of gaining control of there health and having less medical bills to pay due to reduction in readmission to hospital. ACO leadership and Hackensack Medical Center of Heart Failure were pleased with the program and its impact on helping patients receive outpatient care. The ACO will expand the use of the technology platform, by changing the criteria of patients that can receive this monitor. Stakeholders will benefit financially from how
successful the program has become. ( ‘Hackensack Alliance Accountable Care Organization.”) Technology When is the opportune time to invest in the technology? Who are the competitors? During this time, technology is a great investment. New technologies ( software, tablets, artificial intelligence, self driving car and etc) are on the rise and hold a key importance in our day-day to lives and has many benefits. The competitors are individuals with that create new technology and compete will companies doing it for awhile. Consumers How does the innovation address consumers’ increased sense of empowerment and lack of leisure time? This innovation is helping patients gaining control of there medical health and now aware of what to do to have a healthier lifestyle. Accountability How does the innovation meet the various demands for accountability? This innovation makes patient accountable for there own health and now they are aware of what do for a healthier lifestyle. 4. Assess the impact. Use Miller’s Impact Assessment Framework (IAF), described in the IAF guide, to complete a summarized assessment of the Hackensack Alliance case. First, complete the “scan” step of an impact assessment for the technology innovation (see the “Methodology for Applying the Impact Assessment Framework” section in the IAF guide). Scan all eight dimensions to ensure you have a broad perspective on dimensions that are not normally taken into consideration. As you scan the innovation, consider which outcomes apply to your innovation. Use the table below to record the results of your scan. You may delete the outcomes that do not apply. Include your questions or statements in the “Outcomes” column. Every dimension should have at least one outcome. Second, select two of the dimensions that you think are most impacted by the innovation. Evaluate and justify how these two dimensions are most impacted based on your analysis. Document your findings in the “Dimensions Impacted by Innovation” column in the table below. An example is provided in the first row of the table. Dimension Outcomes Dimensions Impacted by Innovation Example: A. Individual Example: A1. Experience of health – How will Hackensack improve the patient experience? A2. Health across settings A3. Privacy A4. Empowerment A5. Behavior Example: This dimension has the potential to be highly impacted due to __. A. Individual A1. Experience of health- will be live longer? A2. Health across settings- will patients have better management of there health? A3. Privacy A4. Empowerment- Will be patients feel empowered to know everything This dimension has the potential to be highly impacted due to health across setting, they change there behavior, they are now aware of the health and have empowerment. Patients will have access to there health and have better
about there health? A5. Behavior- how will there behavior change? management of chronic illness. B. Health Services B1. Patient safety and quality of care- Will this help patients with there safety? B2. Advancing the standard of care- will this become a standard practice everyone? B3. Care efficiency- How will change healthcare? B4. Provider experience of care- will it change patient-provider relationship? B5. Health services model This dimension has the potential to be highly impacted due to patient safety and quality, provider experience of care and advancing the standard of care. Patients will be monitored at home and will be able to enjoy there day to day lives. They will have more power of what they can do and will have to spend less time at provider facilities. C. Community C1. Access to health services- Who will have access to it? C2. Public health C3. Population health management- will individuals live longer? C4. Community engagement D. Operations D1. Capacity and utilization- will there affect the capacity of hospital admissions? D2. Facilities and fixed assets D3. Logistics and supply chain D4. Productivity and optimization- how will change the productivity with inpatient and outpatient care? E. Organization and Workforce E1. Leadership and culture- will there be change in leadership and culture at work? E2. Organizational structure E3. Personnel- Do we have to train staff on how to deal with this new development? E4. Human resources- will we have to hire new people? E5. Performance- will staff enjoy the change in there jobs? F. Strategy and Finance F1. Revenue- How much will it make? F2. Operating costs- is the operating cost covered by the revenue? F3. Investment and debt F4. Financial performance F5. Business strategy- can we increase demand to reduce cost? F6. Innovation strategy- Is there ways to for us to be able to update it the monitor without affecting use? G. Risk Management G1. Clinical- G2. Regulatory- will compliance with
