You have been asked to review evidence relating to the “Churchill
Incident” and ultimately draw a conclusion about what should
happen in the future. The question is:
●
Should polar bear based tourism be encouraged or
discouraged in Churchill, Manitoba?
Consider the direct and indirect roles four groups have had in this
accident. Review the following pictures and quotations to gain a
deeper understanding of the situation. You will need to infer from this
material what has been happening as a result of ecotourism, and
what should happen in the future.
You must gather data relating to the following stakeholder views so
that you can communicate a geographic perspective.
The four stakeholders in this issue (and their general perspective) are:
●
Tourists (social)
●
Mayor of Churchill (political)
●
Manager of Tourism and Economic Development (economic)
●
Naturalists (environmental)

Storytelling about places is recognized as a tool to enhance the reputation of regions as they compete for tourism and economic development spending in the digital age. Through digital media, people can be encouraged to tell their tourism stories and share their experiences.
Stories are so essential to human life that we can be described as the “Storytelling Animal” (Gottschall, 2012). Stories and storytelling help define the nature of humanity (James & Minnis, 2004; Tobin, 2006). Stories, including myths, legends, and folktales (Reamy, 2002), pass on wisdom, knowledge, and culture for thousands of years (Sole and Wilson, 2002, p.73). Storytelling activities are ubiquitous throughout human history, including day-to-day activities, at meals, while traveling, in work songs, and even while dreaming. “Storytelling begins with the very history of mankind, there has never existed anywhere a people without stories” (Barthes et al., 1969). Hence, stories are devices to organize thinking…

In 2009, Detroit, Michigan experienced an aggressive recession as compared to the rest of country. With unemployment rates topping 15%, the city was faced with many challenges financially, economically, and socially.
In addition to the financial challenges, the city was also experiencing political instability and corruption. Various major city officials were being investigated for fraud, bribery, and other criminal charges.
Spirit Electric, operating as a natural monopoly, was the only company in the area providing electric services to Detroit households. Like many other companies, it was experiencing financial difficulties and could no longer continue without some intervention. This was mainly due to high operating costs, foreclosures in the area, and the fact that many households were not paying their bills.
