Lesson 2 Course-long Research Project-Milestone #2 2
After conducting an environmental scan for my company, AT&T, I found the following factors and their effects on the company: technology, government regulations, cultural trends, demographic shifts, and the current economic climate. I will tell you about how each affects the company, how the company relates to each, and what they do to help things in these areas. AT&T has its own climate strategy and transition plan and you can find this and all the information about it listed on one of its websites. I find this to be great when companies do things like this because it shows you that they care about so much more than just making money.
They have a few products and are doing many things like making cities smarter and more sustainable, they are a top company for corporate sustainability leadership, they are committed to
sourcing renewable energy, helping businesses reduce global emissions, and they provide climate data that helps at-risk neighborhoods prepare for extreme weather events. AT&T also has a new collaboration focused on expanding the organization’s commitments to help reduce global emissions. It is called the Connected Climate Initiative (CCI), a collaborative that works on connectivity-based solutions to reduce greenhouse emissions by 1 gigaton by 2035. To reach this goal, the effort brings together a diverse group of organizations to unleash power connectivity solutions, including the Internet of Things (IoT), 5G, and edge computing. Currently, AT&T is working with businesses along with research universities and a range of other organizations, to deliver broadband-enabled climate solutions at a global scale. This collaboration builds on AT&T’s standing commitment to addressing climate change by doing the following. Mitigating its own environmental impacts, including a goal to reach carbon neutrality across its operations by 2035. Enabling the transition to a net-zero economy using AT&T products and services, helping business customers reduce their emissions.
Building resilience against climate-related extreme weather events because AT&T’s customers

and communities depend on the company and the connectivity it provides. Through the CCI, AT&T wants to help companies and other organizations expand their environmental sustainability efforts to make an even greater impact. CCI participants will combine complementary strengths and work together to help reduce global emissions across the board. Improving network efficiency is an effective way for companies to reduce emissions and strengthen their long-term outlook in a world shaped by climate change. Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) technologies can make it possible for companies to use new technology to eliminate the need to purchase, run and maintain stacks of specialized, energy-intensive network equipment. By developing an infrastructure solution like AT&T’s Flexware, businesses can virtualize the functions of multiple
single-purpose network devices on a single low-cost, energy-efficient device or in the cloud. This uses significantly less energy for power and cooling and contributes to a smaller greenhouse
gas emissions footprint for the company. The FlexWare also makes it easier to quickly deploy and efficiently manage multiple virtualized network functions, helping companies acquire new capabilities faster and scale as required. The solution reduces IT complexity and increases flexibility and reliability across multiple environments. AT&T uses broadband connectivity including 5G and edge computing and this is another
critical component for businesses embracing ambitious environmental goals. Faster, more efficient networks enable companies to adopt emissions-reduction solutions by allowing them to monitor equipment and infrastructure and better manage resources like electricity, fuel, water, and raw materials. Smaller problems can waste money and energy at a manufacturing plant, for example, AT&T MEC + 5G can help a business identify and address these inefficiencies and reduce emissions. AT&T MEC is an on-premises edge solution that uses 5G to bring capabilities

How to influence behaviour to support sustainability is one of the biggest difficulties in environmental management. Some people advocate for more regulation and control. Others have noted that having regulation is one thing, but obtaining compliance with it is quite another. Some organizations promote voluntary commitments and compliance. Others continue to advocate for a social marketing strategy focused on the community.
What are the advantages and drawbacks of these different strategies?
