Importance of Alphabetic Principle Letters vs Phonemes Briefly define each of these three ideas. The alphabetic principle is the understanding that there are systematic and predictable relationships between written letters and spoken sounds. It is important to know the differences and what order is best for beginner readers. As an intervention teacher, my entire curriculum is based upon the part to whole method. This explicit method begins with the simplest form of sound, phonemes, and words its way up to three letter blends and special vowel combinations that will be needed to compose words.
