2 Orthographic Mapping When it comes to Orthographic Mapping, we first need to understand the concept of Orthography and this field of study is known as “the study of letters and how they express sounds and form words” (Nordquist, 2019). Orthography plays a major role in the development of spelling and reading because it relies on the usage of knowledge of sound patterns and how they are pronounced correctly upon seeing them in a written format. This means that students use this skill to help differentiate how the terms sound and spelled when they are printed and this is in part by “knowledge of the alphabet and letter formations” (Zaric, 2021). Orthographic Mapping Supports Orthographic mapping supports students' learning by helping them become proficient readers and writers and this occurs by “practicing phonetic awareness and by utilizing letter- sound correspondence” (Ehri, 2013). As educators it becomes our responsibility to introduce sounds and letters to young students and have them practice spelling and patterns to pronounce words. To help promote these teachings to students, the Direct teaching approach will work best because it can be used to teach students with or without exceptionalities, because it is a highly adaptable way of instructing and keeping students engaged. An example of this is having the students practice memorization of words either by having them read and taking notes of key words or by having them use flashcards to help recognize them. Supporting Orthographic Mapping Orthographic mapping relies on the usage of recognizing words and identifying words. The most common words are “sight words” and “high-frequency words” with the latter being “words that are most commonly and frequently used in the English language” (Farrell, 2024). High-frequency words are essential to developing readers and writers since the words can be
3 both irregular and decodable and can help deepen a student's understanding of the words. Since these words are most common and will appear frequently throughout the course of reading material it is recommended to show the students a list of the words first and make them to learn about them before starting to read. This can be done by having them practice a set of words a week and once a week is finished, they can then move onto the second week and practice those
