2 Running head: Comprehension Strategy Demonstration Comprehension Strategy Demonstration According to our textbook titled Reading and Learning to Read graphic organizers and organizers essentially prepare students for ideas to be encountered in reading. Utilizing a graphic organizer will help students link what they know to what they will learn (Vacca et al., 2018). The definition of a graphic organizer is “any diagram of key concepts or main ideas that shows their relationships to each other” (Vacca et al., 2018). There are multiple benefits to using graphic organizers for informational texts in science. The first benefit of a graphic organizer is that it can help highlight key concepts and the main ideas of a text. Graphic organizers can help navigate students as they learn how to sort through complex and difficult text. This is a benefit that not only helps young students but older students as well. Graphic organizers can help students visualize and sequence information that they have learned. Lastly, Kristina Condidorio a student who attended St. John Fisher College published a journal titled The Usefulness of Graphic Organizers in Enhancing Science. She states in her essay that graphic organizers help facilitate “student learning and independence are increased, essentially, they are more prepared to practice those skills independently throughout life” (Condidorio, 2010). A topic from science that I found which spans the K-8 curriculum states that “the student will demonstrate an understanding of scientific reasoning, logic, and the nature of science by planning and conducting investigations” (VDOE, 2010). This is a topic that each grade level K-8 needs to master. According to a scholarly article titled Does Self-generating a Graphic Organizer While Reading Improve Students Learning, they ask the question can you learn from utilizing graphic organizers. I believe you can, but for students to truly learn, they must work on the graphic organizer while reading the corresponding text. The article states that “for them to be

Graphic organizers can be used in primary grades when learning about beginning, middle, and end. After the teacher reads a book aloud, the students will make their own graphic organizers where they will draw pictures to determine what happened at the beginning of the story, middle, and end. Graphic organizers can be used in elementary grades to essentially differentiate. Utilizing a graphic organizer will be great for reading comprehension and reading strategies. While reading a scientific book or article, elementary students will follow along with their graphic organizer’s main idea and details worksheet. As they read the book, they will fill in the worksheet. Lastly, graphic organizers can also be used for middle grades. They can utilize organizers with a bit more difficulty. After learning about a variety of animals students can research an animal of their choice. While conducting research on the animal of their choice students will fill out or make a graphic organizer with important information about the animal. Appendix Supplementary Materials Primary:
