Topic 3 DQ 1 Feb 22-24, 2024 How will your knowledge of language acquisition theories enable you to support the ELLs in your classroom? Provide 1-2 specific examples of how you will apply language acquisition theories into your teaching. Language acquisition is the process by which we are able to develop and learn a language. This generally includes speaking, listening, writing, and overall communication. I would apply my knowledge of language acquisition based on two theories, The Krashen Input Hypothesis: His theory states "that we develop language ability when we understand messages in the target language. Languages are not acquired by studying, by traditional practice, or by listening and repeating. Languages are acquired as we hear or read messages that we can understand in the language at the same level or a bit above."(Hedstrom, 2018). I can use gestures, visual aids, clear and concise language, and contextualized example s as a teacher to give ELLs understandable input. Additionally, I would adapt my language to t he students' proficiency level, progressively raising the level of complexity as they advance. I would create an environment where language acquisition is facilitated and ELLs are able to co mprehend and interact with the content by offering comprehensible input. Vygotsky's Socio-cultural theory: He believed that "learners use their language to help others make sense of the world, social interaction is the key to learning," (Cuantiko, 2018). To apply this theory, I would create opportunities for ELLs to engage in collaborative learning activities. For example, I could pair ELLs with proficient English speakers or more advanced peers to work on tasks together. This collaboration would allow ELLs to receive guidance and support from their peers while being exposed to language models. I would also provide targeted feedback and encourage ELLs to participate actively in discussions, promoting their language development through social interaction.
