SRM 602 Assignment 6 Note: You need to submit only Part II by the due date. The HSB data set and its description, a readme file, are available in Canvas. You can also download the SAS code for question 3, 6, and 7 from Canvas. Part I: Problems from the text : Do the problems 8.9, 8.23, and 8.33 from the course text book. You could ignore the questions related to the omitted parts. Part II: Questions 1. A university health center tracks the number of flu-related visits during each month of the fall semester. The center director wonders whether students come down with the flu more often around midterm (mid-October) and final (mid-December) exams. Can these data shed any light on this issue? Flu-Related Visits to the University Health Center (by months) September October November December 20 48 27 56 Is there any significant difference among the flu-related visits during the fall semester? Use an α level of .05 to test the appropriate hypothesis. 2. Over the past 5 years, an insurance company has had a mix of 40% whole life policies, 20% universal life policies, 25% annual renewable-term (ART) policies, and 15% other types of policies. A change in this mix over the long haul could require a change in the commission structure, reserves, and possibly investments. A sample of 1,000 policies issued over the last few months gave the results shown here. Use these data to assess whether there has been a shift from the historical percentages. Use the 5% significant level. Clearly identify the hypothesis you are testing, report the test statistic and state your conclusion. Category Observed Cell Number, n i Whole life 320 Universal life 280 ART 240 Other 160 Total 1,000 3. Use software to verify the results you obtained in Problem 2. 4. Table below is a 2 × 2 table from an article that studied effects of racial characteristics on whether persons convicted of homicide received the death penalty. The 674 subjects classified in the table were the defendants in indictments involving cases with multiple murders in Florida between 1976 and 1987. Is there enough evidence that the death penalty was imposed less often on black defendants than on white defendants? 1
Death Penalty Yes No Defendant’s Race White 53 430 Black 15 176 5. Suppose we wish to study the relationship between religious affiliation and geographical region. Two groups of people are chosen at random, one from the east coast and one from the west coast of the United States and each person is classified as Protestant, Catholic, or Jewish. The observed frequencies are presented in the following table. Protestant Catholic Jewish East coast 182 215 203 West coast 154 136 110 Test to see if religious faith is independent of the region where one lives. For this test, specify the null and the alternative hypotheses that are being tested, report the Chi-square test statistic and the critical value you are using to conduct the test, and clearly state the conclusion of the test in the context of the problem (use α = . 05). 6. Use software to verify the results you obtained in Problem 5. 7. In the HSB data set, is race related to SES, school type ( SCTYP), or type of high school program (HSP)? You can hand in the R/SAS output that contains the cross-classification tables. Highlight the value of the Chi-square test statistics and their corresponding P-values. For each test, specify the null and the alternate hypotheses that are being tested and clearly state the conclusion of the test in the context of the problem (you may use α = . 05). 2
