Class,   The advantage of motor freight is a timely set schedule with better access to delivery location faster unloading uploading and allows expedite shipments. The shift from rail to motor was not due to fuel efficiency nor environment friendly, but rather the increasing demand and that demand is: Now! Immediate! We need it yesterday! The rise of distribution centers planting themselves with an arm’s reach, thus granting short distant delivery as the norm and leaving rail for long distance to handle mostly raw materials (lumber, metals, etc.).   A resource site, USA Truckload Shipping, highlights the pros and cons of using these two modes of transportation, they state, “The best, most efficient way to reduce shipping costs when thinking about shipping by rail vs truck is to consider a multi-modal strategy. With access to the right transloading facilities and effective container drayage service, you should be able to keep shipments on schedule for a fraction of the cost.” Due to the multi-mode strategy, rail becomes more unappealing and expensive due to the lack of resources to make containers.  A Wall Street journalist, Paul Berger, wrote a bit on the mishandling of shipping containers, “Events such as a grounded container ship’s blockage of the Suez Canal in March [2021], the shutdown of a key port in southern China in May and June that left some 350,000 containers idle and big backups at ports in the U.S. and Europe have added to the strains.”   Regarding the rise traffic accidents that have been involved with motor freight carriers have been attributed to several causes. Most common cause is driver fatigue, which lead impaired driving and speeding into neighboring cars. National Safety Council reported, “In 2021, 5,700 large trucks were involved in a fatal crash, an 18% increase from 2020 and a 49% increase in the last 10 years.” The rise of faster shipping and maximizing fright services seems to correlate with driver fatigue and highway congestion.   Anonymous.
