Kara Miles Turner's article, "Getting It Straight": Southern Black School Patrons and the Struggle for Equal Education in the Pre- and Post-Civil Rights Eras, Turner explores the challenges faced by Southern black school patrons in their quest for equal education. Turner meticulously examines the struggles, contributions, and roles of these patrons, offering a comprehensive insight into their efforts. The author focuses on both the pre and post civil rights eras. She sheds light on their roles and contributions to the fight for educational equality. The research provides a comprehensive understanding of the historical context, she highlights the resilience and determination of Southern black communities in their quest for improved education. This source is a valuable contribution to the perspective on the efforts made by Southern black school patrons during critical periods in American history. “How did Southern black school patrons contribute to the struggle for equal education in both the pre- and post-civil rights eras, and what challenges did they face in their efforts to secure improved educational opportunities for their communities?” 1 Nearly 50 years after Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas (1954) attempted to provide Black children with equal educational opportunity by ruling school segregation unconstitutional, Black education is in crisis. 2 Pratt, A Robert. “ New Directions in Virginia's Civil Rights History” The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography 104, No. 1 (Winter, 1996): 0042-6636 In Robert Pratt’s article “New Directions in Virginia's Civil Rights History”, Robert focuses on civil right history. The article argues that Virginia's history with civil rights deserves more attention and analysis. Pratt references Richard Kluger's book "Simple Justice" as a starting point for understanding the legal battles surrounding desegregation. The article calls for a deeper dive into the diverse narratives and perspectives within Virginia's civil rights movement. Pratt emphasizes the need to actually move beyond only focusing on the well-known events and delve into the complexities and nuances of race relations within Virginia. He shows that we have an idea of what is going on else where, but have no real understanding of what is happening in Virginia. He suggests that we do our best to gain a better understanding of the civil rights fight that is ongoing.
