APUSH 01.06 Option 1 Public Domain Using the 1615 image of Jamestown above, answer a, b, and c. a. Briefly describe the historical context of this image. b. Briefly explain ONE economic or social development in the period 1607–1754 that could be used to explain what the artist shows in the image. c. Briefly explain how ONE element or feature of this image is evidence for the time or place setting of the image. Your responses: a. The image shows the cultivation of tobacco in Jamestown around 1615. After the Anglo- Powhatan Wars, the colonists of Jamestown found that tobacco was the perfect cash crop for the Virginian lands. Since tobacco is a labor-intensive crop, the planters looked to African slaves, who arrived around 1620, as the perfect labor force to cultivate tobacco. b. An economic development in the period 1607-1754 that could explain the image above is the rise of tobacco. The image shows the cultivation of tobacco, which would soon get exported to the markets in Europe. The colonists didn't find gold, but this cash crop allowed them to make as much, or even more, money as they could, as the demand in Europe grew, effecting their economical development. c. One element or feature of the image that is evidence for the time or place setting of the image is that the people in the image are seen farming crops and working hard, with the house structure in the background. The houses are not advanced, meaning the people have recently settled there. The type of house was seen immensely in the 1600’s and 1700’s, leading you to make the connection that the image is the cultivation of tobacco in the early 1600’s.
