Grade: 90/90 Instructor comments: This is a fine effort that does a solid job using evidence from scholarly sources, incorporated with your own analysis. Well done! HIS-144-ONL: Evolution of Democracy Directions: Respond to the three question prompts below using resources from the Topic 3 Readings, including your textbook, materials provided by your instructor through class discussion, and materials from the GCU Library Guide for HIS-144 U.S. History Themes. Please note that the minimum word count varies for each of the questions. While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. The overall assignment must include three to five relevant scholarly sources in support of your content. 1. Compare and contrast the nation’s government from Jefferson’s era with Jackson’s era. Who was eligible to participate in the democratic processes when each was elected? How did that impact who was represented in the federal government? (200-350 words) During the 1800 and 1804 Presidency, Jefferson’s had a strong Democratic-Republican view. That the government must stick to the Constitution and its amendments. He did not care for the big cities, and felt most places were corrupt. Most of his followers called the Jeffersonians were of white males who owned property. They lionized agrarian farmers, making the yeoman farmer a true symbol of American democracy (Schultz, 2018). He also felt that only the elite should be able to run for Presidency, so he wanted the poor to have a good education so that one day they would be able to run for office. He did not campaign, but used the newspapers to help with his votes and get people to see his point of view. Jefferson was the 3 rd president of the United States. His domestic policies focused on: (1) reducing the size of government; (2) navigating the development of the first national court system; and (3) expanding what he saw as the agrarian republic (Schultz, 2018). Choosing to cut back on his federal employees, military, and navy put Jefferson would cost big later down the road. Although he did have achievements during his Presidency, one being the Louisiana Purchase. The 1820s-40s-commonly referred to as the Jacksonian era, as they were dominated by the presidency of Andrew Jackson-constitute a landmark in the history of the early republic, given the specific chronological relationship those decades entertained with the founding period of the United States (Wulf, 2006). Jackson view as more of a Democrat, created more of what we see today with campaign mudslinging. Using the War hero would help people favor him while knocking down the character of his opponent. Most Jacksonians sought power for white men while denying it to people of color, yet some promoted the interests of all laborers, including the enslaved, and granted citizenship and political rights to Native Americans (Lynn & Watson, 2019). Although Jackson felt that anyone should run for Presidency and that a rotation system should be used. Jackson also served as President for two terms like Jefferson. During his Presidency he delt with patronage, nullification, Bank War, and Indian removal. Jackson pretty much fired all federal government jobs and hired people who were his biggest supporters during the campaign. 2. Explain three ways the federal government changed or expanded from the time of Jefferson to Jackson. (200- 350 words)
During Jefferson and Jackson Presidency there were many changes in the Federal government. Both men saw the government and the Presidency in similar and different ways. The 1820s through the 1850s American politics were growing rapidly. While Jefferson was running for office, only white men who owned property were able to vote. This would start to change, by 1940 most white males could vote, some African American could in 5 states, although women still could not vote. During the time Jackson ran for office, more than just white males who owned property could vote, even if you did not own land. He was sup-ported by a coalition of western frontiersmen, southern planters, and the northern working class who supported manhood suffrage (extending the vote to all white men regardless of property ownership) and opposed anyone they considered an aristocrat, even if those aristocrats were interested in extending rights to other, less privileged minorities (Schultz, 2018). Jefferson believed that only educated white males should be appointed into office. He really wanted education to become an important part of America growth. While Jacksonian Democracy focused on having diversity and a harmonious society. He felt that the American people should vote for judges and officials, so he created the election system, instead of being appointed into office. This created more of a democracy by giving more rights to the common man. Which in return helped to encourage political participation, and this would hold them responsible for a poor government. The use of newspapers had exploded as well, creating a broader reach to the public on politics, in area of the Democratic Party or the Whig Party. Then an electoral committee would form by each party, creating parades, picnics, and going door to door to spread the word. There were other movements as well with in the labor force. Women’s rights were becoming stronger as well. Although it may seem they wanted different things for America, they truly did want to better the life here. They both wanted to expand America and help it grow farther west. 3. Identify one way that democracy can be improved or continue to grow today. How can it be done? (350-500 words) One way that can improve democracy, I believe that we need people to understand how important it is to vote. Getting more people to vote, maybe also not making it so confusing when to vote. Why are there so many different days to vote? I am 43 years old, and I have voted maybe 4 times, not sure. I honestly can say many times I did not understand what was going on in the politics and who was wanting what at times. Maybe if creating a campaign that talks about what you are going to do and not about what is bad about the opponent. Going out to vote is based on what information is given to the public and what you have done during your “career in politics”. Also, who is paying for these campaigns? Who is funding them, is this how some people get into office, because of who you are and who you know? How is this fair to someone who truly cares for America and the American people and what is best for this Nation or locally? There is not enough information or resource maybe for some to understand when or why to vote. How does this help the democracy? When we exercise our power to vote, we can elect candidates to local, state, and national leaders. This helps to represent the communities they will serve. Also, we can start creating more diversity within the office, by electing people of color, race, and other nationalities or communities. If the truth in what they want is not corrupt or abusing the power in office. I also feel that there should be more term limits in office and how long someone should stay in politics. When we have people in the house for years at a time, it can seem like the government is not progressing with the pace it needs too. This may also be the reason why we have a low voting rate because they feel not much will change with the same people in office. There are many obstacles and distrust in the government to the American people. Now more than ever with social media and not being able to trust the news as to what is real or fake news. There are many more ways to improve democracy and continue to grow, but the most important I feel is that we need to get more people educated on when to vote.
