Topic 1 DQ 2 Grade 5/5 Instructors’ comments: Great job - A Model of Christian Charity IS hard to understand - good job grappling with it! Well, done! Read John Winthrop's "A Model of Christian Charity" and Carville Earle’s "Pioneers of Providence." John Winthrop defines the Puritan Ideal of Community, while Earle provides an economic and geographic perspective for establishing the English colonies in North America. Discuss the motivations for English colonization of America. Identify a particular group or colony and discuss the political, economic, or social reasons behind their coming to the New World. Explain. Reading Carville Earle’s “Pioneers of Providence”, I did struggle to follow this article. From my understanding I feel it describes more on the beginning process of the first settlers, then talks about the political progresses of the colonies. In the 1607 expeditions English wanted to begin colonies in Jamestown, Virginia. Many settlers came to the new land in hope of religious freedoms, land, gold, silver, and trade. In the beginning everyone was doing well, getting a fort and a town up and running. Then, unfortunately the area was not the best for fresh water. Many were killed from diseases like dysentery. There were many up and downs not to mention the ties to England for financial support. A lot of the information, I truly do not understand. Through their trail and errors other colonies were able to grow and succeed. Now comparing Winthrop and his experiences we are now in 1630. This would be 23 year later, hearing about the complications and what works and what does not work sets him in a better position for success. I can honestly say after reading John Winthrop’s “A Model of Christian Charity”, I feel more confused than before reading it. I am having a hard time understand what information in this reading really tells me what happened with Winthrop and his followers. The reason for my confusion is because it was written on his trip to Massachusetts as a sermon. I do know from history and because I live in the Boston area, that Winthrop is an important part of how Boston was established. He practiced law even though he never passed the bar and very religious. He felt that God chosen him to better this world of all their wicked ways and consider himself a saint. In the 1620’s there was an economic slump that hurt his position and land in England. Also, King Charles I was making some anti-puritan polices. This started to concern Winthrop because he was a puritan. Massachusetts Bay Company had gained a royal charter to develop new colonies in the new lands. He convinced Massachusetts Bay Company to elect him governor and to move his family to the new land. While sailing to the new lands with other puritans, he wrote the sermon, which is about what pictured that the colony would consists of. Their devotion to God and communal work and to help each other. During his last 19 years he was elected governor 12 times, worked hard long with others to labor and build organized towns each having with their own church. He was also smart in knowing his history and prevented the same issues that happened in Jamestown. Winthrop had kept the charter documents with him and was able to form their own government separate from England. Then by creating this government, they spread out in different areas of Massachusetts, that then create towns holding their own meeting. The Puritans that colonized Boston believed that they were there because of God, that He helped
to pave the way for their colony to survive. Later, there were many who felt that politics and church should be separated. Winthrop had these people banished, some of which left Massachusetts to start their own colony in Rhode Island and Connecticut. Winthrop’s view on American Indians was that they needed salvation and they could help with the beginning of the colony with food and trade. In the 1630’s more Puritans come colonize this area to get away from the civil war in England, so more land is needed. The American Indians had not claimed land so because of this many would be pushed out, which ultimately ended with American Indians in war and in slavery. Here is some information I found as well; it may give a little more information on John Winthrop. Hope it is ok to share! https://www.worldhistory.org/John_Winthrop/ References Winthrop, J. (2017).
