Both the primary and secondary sources advance the historical narratives of the Philippine Revolution against Spain and the US, although with different focuses and perspectives. For instance, while the secondary source by History.com Editors (2010) reports on how the Philippine revolution started with the formation of rebel groups, which led to the conquering of Spanish authority in the Philippines, Luci-Atienza and Cahiles-Magkilat (2019) document about the establishment of June 12, 1898, as the proclaimed independence day in
Philippine. Similarly, the primary source by Aguinaldo (1899) presents a historical narrative from the author's firsthand experience in the Philippine Revolution. Equally, Aboitiz (2020) provides a historical narrative of the revolution from a regional perspective, whereby the revolution is perceived as a local resistance to subjugation across Southeast Asia. Describe one narrative that has significantly influenced the contemporary understanding of your historical event. The historical narrative offered by History.com Editors (2010) has substantially impacted my understanding of the historical event in that the resistance to Spanish rule grew organically across the Philippines. First, Philippine priests began to resist Spanish rule because of the widespread dominance of the Spanish-led Catholic church. The middle class and intellectuals later joined the resistance. A secret revolutionary society under the leadership of Emilio Aguinaldo also emerged, kickstarting the revolution. This understanding has been significantly insightful in shaping my perspective on the revolution. Explain how the chosen narrative helps you better understand your historical research question. This narrative deepens my understanding of the Philippine revolution in that I have realized that the Philippines were not comfortable with the imposition of Spanish culture in their country. For instance, Philippine priests did not like the Spanish domination of the Catholic church in the region, fueling their resolve to resist Spanish rule. How did appeals to traditional Filipino cultural values and identity contribute to generating revolutionary sentiment against Spanish rule?
