"One Health" is a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach that recognizes the
interconnectedness of human health, animal health, and environmental health. It emphasizes
the interdependence of humans, animals, and ecosystems and acknowledges that the health of
one sector impacts the health of the others.
2. In your own words, explain the One Health approach to healthcare for animals, people, and
the environment.
The One Health approach to healthcare for animals, people, and the environment is education,
surveillance, and preparedness. They focus on educating people on how to prevent getting any
diseases from wildlife and animals such as our own pets and farm animals. They also prepare
for any outbreaks that may occur as a result of diseases caught by the animals.
3. How does a society’s culture affect the One Health approach, and how might age, gender, or
socio-economic status affect how someone values One Health?
Those who are younger might be more interested in One Health than the older generations
because they have more access to education and understand technology. Those who are older
might prefer traditional practices and do not do too well with technology. As for gender, women
are typically more caring and play significant roles in food and health. This could result in
generally more women being interested in the One Health approach than men.
4. How does One Health affect your day-to-day life?
One Health affects my day-to-day life because I am very cautious of everything around me,
especially because I go to classes on campus and work in retail. I am often surrounded by
different people each day and find myself washing my hands so much to prevent anything. I also
love animals, so I am with them quite a lot.
5. Spend some time researching One Health in news. Find two news stories related to one
health and share them here. Note, you might not find much if you search directly for One Health.
Refer to the materials posted in the module to help you narrow your focus. For each news story

establishes their credibility as they have knowledge of the topic (zoonotic diseases).
Accuracy: The information is supported by evidence, refers to different studies, and has
references at the end.
Purpose: Their main purpose is to review the study done on the response of community hunters
when encountering signs of zoonotic diseases in game animals.

Zoonotic diseases, which originate in animals and can infect humans, have caused a significant
portion of emerging disease events since the mid-twentieth century. The recent COVID-19
pandemic has emphasized the importance of understanding how diseases spread from wildlife
to humans. Researchers developed an experimental game to simulate the decision-making
process of hunters when faced with potential disease transmission scenarios. By observing the
decisions made by hunters in the experimental game, researchers gained insights into the
factors influencing their participation in disease surveillance efforts.
e. Describe what will happen if the One Health approach is successful. Be specific about the
health outcomes and explain why they are relevant. (Minimum 4 sentences)
If the One Health approach is successful, it would lead to significant improvements in public
health outcomes across various dimensions such as a reduction in zoonotic disease, enhanced
food safety, and sustainable environmental health. One Health emphasizes the connection
between human, animal, and environmental health. By addressing health issues at the
human-animal-environment level, there would be a decrease in the transmission of zoonotic
diseases from animals to humans. One Health approaches integrate food safety measures
throughout the food production chain, from farm to table. By addressing food safety concerns
related to animal management, food processing, and distribution, there would be a decrease in
foodborne illnesses caused by pathogens.
